FS5: FS5 sometimes SLog, sometimes baked in, what's going on?

If anyone can shed any light on this i'd be very grateful.
Just been doing some tests with my new FS5. If I shoot in PP8 it looks like S-Log through the LCD but when I import it into FCPX it has a baked in look, like a LUT has been applied. Unusable.
I just tried PP9 and all was fine, what I was seeing was what I got when imported. I'm mega confused, hoping it's just those middle of the day sugar downs that are causing a malfunction in my head and not the camera!
Thanks

Just noticed, as well, if I reset a PP to it's original factory settings it isn't working properly. PP8 and 9 are meant to be daylight and Tungsten but my PP9 is saying it is S-GAMUT3/3200K and PP8 is saying it is S-GAMUT3.CINE/3200K ? Unless that's what they actually are supposed to be and i'm researching incorrectly online.

Select the clip in the browser and then check in the inspector to see what the Log Processing setting is for the clip.

FCPX has applied its own LUT.

If you want to do your own thing just select the clips in the browser and change Log Processing to None.

Woah, when did it start thinking it could grade my footage! Must be new in 10.3?

Yes, 10.3 looks at the metadata from the camera and applies a LUT on your footage. I haven't tested this myself yet as I haven't imported anything since updating to 10.3.

However, I have noticed that if you use the internal LUTs, as opposed to a 3rd party plugins, the performance is much better.

You don't have to use the SLog3 LUT, I quite like the Arri LogC LUT.

that's really strange in FCP 10.3 . Also in the import window I have a LUT preview applied.
I couldn't find a check box to turn it off neither in the import preview nor as standard when imported.
The internal LUT does not match if your exposure is 1000EI

(10.3 crashed with the Blackmagic Desktop Video from time to time when I drag a text layer)

It's an awful addition if you don't have the option to not have it automatically do it. Should be an option in the import window really.

Clermond, write a feedback request for an exposure slider so we can match our EI to the LUT. Unfortunately the camera doesn't send our gain setting metadata out so it can't be interpreted automatically so an exposure slider seems like a good option.

At the creative summit the FCPX team said they were extremely serious about the App and really want to focus on pro workflows.

I think that's the blackmagic driver crashing not FCPX, I've seen other reports of BM crashing too.

I had bloody fingers from writing feature requests of more sensitive settings / pucks at the color board.

I still had an old BM version from 2015 which crashed. I updated and it still crashed. I have edited hours of subtitles in 10.2.x with the old driver without any issue.

You appreciate they've rewritten large chunks of the underlying code which could easily account for a broken driver?

If you don't continue to send in feedback don't complain when features aren't implemented. I've had contact with the developers to ask about bugs I've reported and the specifics of features I've requested so they most certainly listen.

I have no idea what happened and why. Regarding listening: I was talking with Steve Martin from Ripple training about the missing sensitivity and he told me he had complained over and over and over.. Maybe they listen but it doesn't mean that they see it in the same way :-/

thanks for this hint. It looks surprisingly nice as a first start or for dailies

See also the VLog LUT. I have found it works well with XAVC footage that I've shot at 2 stops over.

So until Apple introduce ISO adjustment for their LUTs or an exposure slider that works underneath the LUT VLog is a quick workaround to regaining over exposed highlights.
