Is there any cheapskate way of viewing scopes/waveforms on my FS5? Not available (yet) on my Black Magic Video Assist. Not available in camera. Is the only way to get a monitor with scopes? Or can I connect the camera to my mac?
You can connect to a Mac as long as it has thunderbolt connection. You need an Ultra Studio Mini Recorder from Blackmagic and Scopebox software from Divergent Media. I had to do a lot of juggling with settings to get it to see the FS5 but it definitely works. All in its about £250 in the UK. Plus whatever length cables you need. I bought it for the same reason but in fact I have since bought the Aputure 7" monitor that comes with Waveform. Like you I am also hopeful that we will see waveform added to the Video Assist. The screen is in a different league to the Aputure in case you are wondering.

Have started bringing the mini-recorder / scopebox combo to shoots all the time, since it also gives me the easy option of providing an additional client monitor (reducing the scopes and having the monitor function go full-screen) when the request arises.
