FS5: FS5 RAW with Odyssey 7q / White Balance Bug

hey all fs5 raw shooters,

i'm trying to figure out whats wrong with my fs5 raw + odyssey 7q combo.

i'm shooting at sgamut 5500k / slog2.
in resolve in the raw tab the white balance and tint is always completely different. it's all over the place.
seems like the camera is doing some auto white balance stuff instead of being at the fixed 5500k.

when i change to 3200k its the same thing. the values are lower but still changing randomly.

since the white balance seems to be baked in (changing it in post to same values gives different results) this is a huge problem.

i also downloaded all fs5 raw files that i could find from other shooters and they are much more consistent. (always color temp: 5399 / always tint: 10.23)

whats going on with my 7q / fs5? :(

here are 2 dngs:

thanks all for your help!

If the FS5 is like FS700, WB is in fact baked into the raw signal. Which would mean that if your FS5 is set to Auto WB that will transfer to the raw signal.

No, that is not correct. The FS7 bakes white balance into the raw output. The FS700 and the FS5 do not.

Was the ND wheel in a different position for the two shots? I don't think the camera is doing any auto white balancing. It is fixed at 5500K in both your DNGs.

I believe that what you are seeing is that the Kelvin and Tint values shown in Resolve include a slight compensation for colour casts in the ND filters in the FS5. Different ND wheel settings need different compensations. Resolve's white balance presets are obviously not aware of this required compensation, so do not work correctly. I recommend that you either leave white balance on "As Shot", or use the "As Shot" Kelvin and Tint as a start point for tweaking, ignoring the fact that it does not match the camera setting.

oh... thats a good explanation.
i definitely used the internal vari nd at different stops for the 2 shots.
but i think the same thing appears if i'm not using the nd at all and shooting at 3200k inside. also random values all the time.
i will do a test tomorrow with no nd at 5500k.

i'm also a bit confused because all other fs5 raw dngs that i found online all had the same settings in resolve. always color temp: 5399 / always tint: 10.23
only my files have these strange values.

but big thx for your help nick!

Dear dreamXpress,

We appreciate Nick Shaw posting about this issue.

Could you please let us know what firmware version of our firmware you are using?

This is found under Odyssey (or Apollo) then About.

Nick is working with us to get to the bottom of the issue you are presenting.

Respectfully,

after testing i think nick's ND explanation is true.
i just did a test with s gamut 5500k and no ND and put all files into resolve.
all had the same values: color temp: 4449 (just confused why 1000 lower than the 5500k set in camera) and tint: -18.52

thx for your help!
