Hi,

The area's you have circled in your freeze-frames look like 'normal/expected' compression artifacts. They are introduced when pushing the limits of the bitrate for any given camera and resolution/fps combination. I've never shot with the FS5, but I imagine it's in a similar (and probably worse) situation than the FS7 in "high framerate" modes. The problem is that the data rate for HFR footage, compared to 'standard' shooting, is not high enough to give the same quality.

That said, this forum has an unfortunate habit of re-compressing images once they're uploaded. If you see something in your original images that is not as visible in the images above, then I suggest uploading to Flickr or other photo-sharing platform, and just link the images in this thread.

There's lots of numbers regarding different FS5 shooting modes and their data rates that you could look up using Google if you want a more detailed understanding, but my opinion is that there's nothing wrong with your camera, and you have basically two choices. 1) learn to 'live with what you have' and get on with creating, or; 2) invest in a camera (and all the accessories) that are designed for HFR shooting. Unfortunately the second option is likely to be 5-10x more expensive than an FS5 setup.

Hope that makes things a little clearer,

jason

Those artifacts around high contrast areas of the frame are not from compression, because they can be found in the RAW data stream as recorded to the Odyssey. I chalk it up to 'you gotta give up something on an inexpensive camera...'
