FS5: FS5 Odyssey7Q+ HDMI issue

I wonder if someone could help here, I just received my 7Q+ and absolutely love the unit, my first shoot was with the Amira and the 7Q+ was a great on set SDI monitor, back home I'm trying to get my FS5 to show up over HDMI in both HD and UHD and for the life of me I can't get it to work.

the supplied HDMI cable isn't suitable so I used a SmallHD mini to full HDMI cable, it doesn't work for input either via HD or UHD but if the 7Q+ has a signal on screen I can use my cable for HDMI output no problem. I did s little research and suspected the cable, Convergent do not sell cables so it's a bit of a mine field trying to find one that's reliable so I turned to Atomos, they make cables for their recorders so picked up their mini to full coiled HDMI cable, it's short and isn't going through any adapter that may rob the cable of any signal but I have the same issues, no HD or UHD signal over HDMI no matter if I'm in 50/60hz, 24, 25, 30, 50, 60p, 50/60i or if the I am in HD or UHD.

No idea what to do, it's all good saying it's the cable and it might well be the cable but I find that unlikely considering I bought a brand new HDMI cable from a company that makes cables for its own HD and UHD recorders, if that doesn't work where else should I go for a mini to full HDMI cable?

This may be irrelevant, but my 7Q+ (over a year old) had the HDMI input on the side mislabelled as an output and I was thinking the input was the HDMI connector on the bottom (actually the output). Also after upgrading the firmware I had to do a factory reset in order to make the HDMI work .

Have you tested the FS5's HDMI output with another monitor? If it doesn't work with another monitor, it is probably either the cable or a camera output setting issue. Have you reviewed the outputs in the manual, pages 127 and 128 and double checked the settings in the camera?

Tried resetting the system with no improvement, I also own the SmallHD 502 but it has a full size HDMI connector which means that I can confirm the FS5 output is working, I also used the SmallHD monitor to confirm that my mini to full size HDMI cables work, both cables can be used to output a HDMI signal from the 7Q+ to 502 when the 7Q+ has a SDI signal active

First off, you do need to make sure the settings are correct on the Odyssey7Q+ to make sure it will accept a signal over HDMI. It needs to be in either HD -> HD ProRes or 4K/UHD -> 4K/UHD ProRes. If it is in the wrong one it won't work and if it is in any RAW mode it won't work.

Nothing again Atomos and its cables, but we have had decidedly mixed experience with them. One of the issues is that the plastic oversold on the connector can be a bit thick for our socket, which means that the plug itself won't seat fully. So the connector can appear to be plugged in all the way but not actually make proper contact. I've seen a number of people use them and other brands where they have taken a pocket knife to shave back the plastic of the connector so the thing will plug in.

My personal recommendation for an HDMI cable is the Sanho HyperThin. It's very thin and flexible, which means that you can coil up the excess to keep things neat and it won't apply any torque against the connector. Other cables are always trying to unplug themselves. For the FS5 you want the HDMI Mini to HDMI model. Here it is on the manufacturer's website but it's available from B&H and others:

If this doesn't fix the issue then please be in contact with our Tech Support at cdsupport@convergent-design.com. We test all this stuff before shipping but I guess it is possible that there is something wrong with your device. If so we will certainly take care of it.

What? That would mean that somehow your Odyssey7Q+ came to you with an original Odyssey7Q screen protector applied to it. That should never have happened. Did you buy it new from us or was it secondhand?

When we moved from the Odyssey7Q to the Odyssey7Q+ we had to swap the location of the HDMI in & out ports because the new input driver chip was larger. The screen protector holds all the labelling for the connectors. I'm very surprised to hear that this happened from the factory.
