FS5: FS5 Grip

Does anyone else notice the slight play in the grip once it's attached and locked? If you move it forward and back there is a slight bit of play to it. It's a minor quibble but wish it didn't move at all once attached. Doesn't feel completely solid.

Yes, noticed that as well. It is one of several reasons why I ditched the arm/grip altogether and went with a wood grip that mounts on 15mm rails. There are drawbacks to doing that- I have to REC / stop REC with my left hand, ride iris with my left hand, and I give up other features of the Sony grip. But that said it is also a bit liberating. It provides for a much more solid purchase on the camera and I do not have to deal with the arm when storing the camera in its case. That method is not for everyone but I have made it work for me and come to like it. It is, after all, similar to the setup most F5 and f55 owners employ.

What we all want is a way to attach the Sony grip directly to 15mm rails. One owner has come up with his own method of accomplishing that, but it was an involved process. I am surprised that, as of yet, no company has come up with an aftermarket product to facilitate rail mounting of the Grip. I suspect the reason for that is the design Sony used makes it difficult to develop a modification. Although one accessory maker did come up with a rail mount for the FS700 grip. Won't work with Fs7 grip, unfortunately, as they are of different design. Had Sony designed the control grip so that it mounted to the arm with a standard rosette everything would have been much simpler. Whether that was an oversight or intentional decision is unknown to me. The fact that the arm requires tools in order to be extended and retracted is another poor design choice.

If anyone is interested in a wood hand grip, check out ErgoCine or KinoGrip. I have no affiliation with either company. Their wood grips are pricey but it is a purchase I have not regretted. My grip does not have a REC trigger. That helps keep the price down. I don't think either company produces a grip with a REC trigger that will work with the Fs7. You will also need a rosette bridge for mounting the wood grip. My grip is rock solid. No play at all.

JPNola,

The OP is questioning the FS5's grip, not the FS7's, though it sounds as they have similar play.

Also a fan of KinoGrip, though don't have a Sony cable to try out. I've considered ditching the FS7's arm, but not ready to give up the Smart Grip's functionality. Shape's arm improves the ergonomics, but adds weight, & eats up even more room in the carry-ons.

relocating the grip on a FS5

relocating the grip on a FS5

One thing I would like to get and maybe someone can help me. I want to relocate the handgrip to the back of my tripod arm for when I am on the sticks. I like having a start stop and zoom on a lanc on the tripod arm when I have the camera on the sticks. I wish it had a separate lanc impute so I could quickly grab it off the tripod and shoot but I don't know how to get that done. I read you can get a standard rosette but I don't see how the hand grip would mount to that since it is a bayonet. Any advice or a rig suggestions would be great.
