FS7: FS5 & FS7 firmware info: FS5 RAW, auto-ND. FS7 24p 4K, spot auto focus

Yup. But havent we heard rumors that Sony acknowledged that FS7 raw was a mistake? A step in the wrong direction?

where did you hear that? The only thing we know that RAW does not work properly in the combination XDCA and 7Q/7Q+
It's not sure that it's Sony's issue or mistake. There's also another partner in the game.
Sony fixed the FS5 issue quite fast while from the manufacturer of the recorder fixes take ages.
(does anybody remember that the Gemini was announced with DNxHD but it never came?)

On this board i reckon.

Its the need for another adapter that was the mis-step. Thats why FS5 has SDI raw out, like FS700.

Why doesnt FS7 have this feature? Is the raw from FS7 better than FS5/FS700? Dont think so... It seems obvious Sony learned something along the way, but its just a rumor from some forum poster i read way back when FS5 was released.

(I remember the Odyssey was announced with DNxHD and it hasnt came yet, has it? Im not following the news on that anymore.)

I spoke to a sony rep pretty recently, and he told me that the FS7 doesn't have the hardware built in to do so. The XDCA has the raw processing board along with a Prores chip/board built in as well. And by some magic Sony was able to build it into the FS5.

The XDCA offers HD ProRes encoding, gunlock and timecode in/out. For that it needed access to the RAW data signal before it was turned into video, so that is why RAW output was included in it. Note that aside from the RAW output, the other functions are not available in the upcoming update of the FS5.

I wouldn't say it's by some magic, every previous gen camera inherits DNA from the last one. Sony get's chips or boards made that later on can easily be incorporated into newer version camera's. We saw the FS700 sensor (ahead of it's time) later on get implemented into the F5 and after that the FS7...

None of this is anything new and hence why the FS5 won't need an add-on or board to offer 12-bit RAW stream via SDI. But you also probably won't get TC or other bits outlined by Mitch.

12bit raw or prores from a compact body like the FS5 to an external recorder (taking care of LUTs and such) for only marginally more then the FS7 sound like a pretty great option to me....

I have the XDCA, largely for TC sync with those annoying sound people who keep attaching devices all over my cameras. 12bit linear was never an attraction honestly.

However, 12bit Log XAVC-I on-board could be fantastic for those mid level productions and low budget features. I don't know if the XDCA loop-back to on-board can carry 12bit, and perhaps is not possible. 12bit Log out the XDCA is more likely. That would be nice.

Seriously Sony, you have your instructions.
