It is real. I didn't know whether this would drop before NAB or at NAB Sony press conference. Obviously before....

Thanks for sharing starcentral. Does anyone here used the af on the fs7? I wonder if the af update will be any good for gimbal use.

Hehe yeah, im not sure ill even do this update, as theres a risk of bricking the camera and then Sony goes and says its your own fault... Anyone know how it went with the poor guy who got that message?

Anyhow, ive used the FS7 AF with Glidecam work on the Sony FE 24-70. Im not impressed, but then again its autofocus. It will probably never replace a good focus puller...

I was hoping that the datarates for all recording modes would increase to at least the limit of the camera i.e. currently 600 Mbps. I believe the F5/55 got an increase in their datarates in the latest update.

Hmms... no 2k raw out on the fs5 at 240fps like the fs700R?? Was really hoping for that feature. :S

That disclaimer that shooting raw with the 18105G can cause distortion was a good reminder.
Shot raw with that lens and the FS700 the other day and thought I had somehow turned off the auto compensation, but now I remember!

i am a little confused now: after these firmer updates:
FS7 is still 10 bit internal and 12bit raw (or proves) external via several optional attachments and recorder(s)
FS5 is 8 bit internal but 12bit raw (or proves) external via one cable and recorder(s)
i really, really like the XAVC-I of the FS7 and have never bothered with an external recorder, just makes no sense to me with that camera and especially since the internal codec works so well (for me at least).....
but with this upgrade the FS5 with an external recorder is about the same price as FS7 and provides 12 bit raw in a much smaller and lighter package?
i understand that the FS7 has other advantages (ports,..) but still.....
does the FS5 have the flexible AF spot?
i thought there was a sony compressed raw format in the works?
it would make sense to get some kind of compressed raw 12 bit format on the FS7....the camera and the cards should be fast enough....
but i guess there might be another camera (slightly above FS7) coming anyway....

I am waiting for Sony to be like.... for $500 will unlock your FS7 SDI port to send RAW OUT without the XDCA Extension Unit. Now that would be a firmware update! I wouldn't mind it.

i am super happy with the FS7 internal 10bit recording as well!
but if the FS5 with atomos/odyssey can do 12bit prores.....that combo would be smaller, lighter with a better file at just about the same price....
i guess the question is: is the raw output over SDI 10 or 12 bit?

i am with you on that but the question then really is why the XDCA in the first place? coming from RED, i am a huge fan of raw but the implementation on the FS7 was always way too clunky for me....and again: especially since the internal 10bit is so great....

Smaller than an FS7 + XDCA + v-Lock Batt + Oddysey. A lot smaller, which is his point.

Yup. But havent we heard rumors that Sony acknowledged that FS7 raw was a mistake? A step in the wrong direction? Thats why FS5 has FS700 type of raw out.

For me, the FS7 benefits is FS700 + O7Q ProRes performance internally.

For a lot of my work, FS5 would be sufficient. Or even A7S II. But for those days you can whip out your 4K 10 bit raw internal, the FS7 pays itself off immediately :-)

I've wondered from the start if that $2k was Sony's little trick. And then if, similar to the F5, someone unlocks the raw out w/o the XDCA... they start back pedaling...
