FS5: FS5 Centre Scan/Crop vs Clear Image Zoom

A quick question in case anyone has properly tested this?

I'm filming @ 1080p, but want to exactly double my lens range.

Will a centre Scan/Crop give a better result compared to a 2xClear Image zoom? I understand that whilst the centre crop/scan does just that, the 'Clear image zoom' uses some voodoo processing.

Anyone have any real world experience of one vs the other?

Cheers

There's no question, use Center Scan.

Brilliant, thats very helpful. I will do more testing of 'Clear image zoom' limitations later in the week, but have to shoot a gig from the back tomorrow so will stick with Centre-scan, & optical-zoom . cheers

I've tested it, and made a video. Clear Image Zoom should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. It's better than old school digital zoom, but it still degrades the image.

FYI

Center Scan also introduces some sort of image degradation, too.
It's just a tad softer.

Why?
Because you need more than 1080x1920px on a bayer-pattern sensor to get full 1080x1920 resolution.
In full scan mode, the image processor uses the full resolution of the sensor and downres's fo the HD resolution.
In center scan mode it's a 1:1 pixel thing.

Full scan mode uses pixel binning. A lot of aliasing results. Center crop looks much better, but only if you have a sharp lens.
