FS5: FS5 Black Gamma

Could someone please shed some light: Re Cine Gamma Profiles: Why would you lower the Black Gamma in the low range? Essentially wouldn't you be losing dynamic range in the blacks? Kind pf like crushing them a bit?

Wouldn't raising the Low Black Gamma by a few clicks give a flatter look and more room to move in post?

Also just a thought (as i have not received my FS5 yet) I was wondering if raising the Middle Gamma a few clicks along with the Low would emulate the C-Log profile? Would be interesting for someone to test. :)

BTW Doug Jenson if your lurking :) have u managed to build a Profile for the FS5 that matches the LC-709TypeA look? but in a WYSIWYG Profile? Now that is something i would definitely purchase :)

Sorry, I've had no reason to try matching the FS5 to the FS7. And if I did, it would not be to match the LC-709TypeA LUT -- which I am not really a fan of. I feel I already have a better PP than that for the FS5.

Hey Doug, I've set up the PP described in your training video, and am liking it so far. It's great for most situations.

I like the PP too its looks lovely.

But after some testing ive set Master Black to 0 and left Gamma. I feel this gives me more room to move in post : I do understand this is a WYSIWYG profile and i would use this when i need to deliver straight to the source.

I'm leaving it alone for now, but I would like a second version with lifted darks for very low light. I shot some home movies in a badly lit birthday party, and the blacks were too crushed. I'm not sure what combo of black-related settings to change. Black Gamma lifted it a bit, but Black Level washed everything out. I will say that the blacks keep the noise hidden as they are. And in well lit scenes this PP is looking good, as I would make it if I were color correcting it.

Chadfish: i'd recommend leaving Master Black at 0. And don't touch the gammas. This allows for a simple knead in post. The original PP we are talking about is a What You See Id What You Get - WYSIWYG and awesome to offload to clients.

Its funny we ae all professional camera men but all shoot different i.e PP's. Zebras, exposure etc.

Hi BeHop, yes I'm aware that it's a WYSIWYG PP. I normally grade everything, so I'm liking this for simplicity. I just want a 2nd simple WYSIWYG for low light.

Try lleaving the PP as is but going 1/25 or 1/30 depending if yr PAL/NTSC land. Honestly whenever ive used it (even for broadcast ) nobody has noticed a motion blur and it gives u an extra stop.

We are pixel peepers but audiences are not.

Try with Master Black at -2 and don't touch the Black Gamma. This will be less contrasty and allow more light in the blacks. Also try lifting Middle Black Gamma a few clicks in Cine Gamma 3. I'd be interested in the results.
