FS5: FS5 50p not 50p!

Totally bamboozled. Shot some clips at 50p 50Mbps on my FS5. When i import the clips into FCPX it is doubling frames i.e. when I frame step through the clip every frame plays twice. I downloaded Sony Catalyst Browse, and the same thing happens when I step through the clip.

What is going on? I wanted to use the footage on a 25fps timeline to get smooth half speed slo-mo. Instead I get a stuttering effect.

Grrr total schoolboy error - had shutter speed on 1/30th, therefore a combo of shutter speed and frame rate that won't work. Bloody annoying that the camera lets you set such a combo and doesn't give a warning.

On a 25p FCPX timeline, try to speed the footage X2, it should read every other frame and you'll have a regular 25p footage (no slowmo BTW). Hope it'll work for you ;)

The footage looks fine like you say when I speed it up. Did some more shots at 1/50th sec and they work perfectly for 2 x slo-mo. Just annoys me the camera gives no warning that it's going to frame skip if you record at too slow a shutter speed for the frame rate.

You should probably shoot more like 1/100 or higher for slow motion effects. I assume you're not looking for "natural motion blur" in your slow motion, most people want crisp clear frames for the slow motion, so a slightly faster shutter speed (double, since you're planning to play back at half speed) should do you right.

Atleast that's how I've always understood it.

I don't need to do that on this occasion, the slo-mo is being used to slow down a slowly rotating turntable shot, so motion blur isn't an issue. Normally your right, the shutter speed needs to be fast for slo-mo. And with the FS5, lots of light is needed.

I don't need to do that on this occasion, the slo-mo is being used to slow down a slowly rotating turntable shot . . .

If that's the case, you'd be better off using S&Q Motion instead of setting the camera for 50P. That's the kind of shooting S&Q Motion is designed for and it offers much better control than just using a 50P record format.
