FS5: FS5 4K seems soft

Hey!
So I'm shooting on FS5 in 4k in slog 3 and i just feel it should be giving me a sharper image than what i see. I focus it using the magnifier and peaking on (the magnifier is so soft its so hard to see focus) but I'm not changing the focal length on the lens so its 100% focused on the subject. Is there any thing i can do to make it sharper? Or am i missing anything? Im shooting using canon 24-104 with metabones speed booster but also shot with 16-35 Sony lens and no difference in sharpness. Also would filming to an external recorder give me a sharper image? in what way does the image improve by going to an external recorder? Thanks

You'll need to grade it in post (which will include adding contrast and maybe even sharpening it).

Some people even choose to tweak the in-camera settings and increase the sharpness of S-Log3 a little bit (if applicable) as it should be pretty low if not down all the way by default.

With my a7III, it's down to -7 by default (all the way down) but I choose to use -2, which makes a big difference with detail (in my opinion) without looking artificial.

hey, yes i do grade in post. the sharpness is set to 0. But i just see how videos on youtube that look sharper. Not sure if canons are know for being sharper?

The 24-105 isn't the sharpest lens in the world, but not terrible either.

If you think it's the lens (that one or the Sony), try something much better and see if that changes your outlook.

If not, try playing with the sharpness in the camera. (My mirrorless workflow won't necessarily translate to the FS5, but just saying.)

If that doesn't help, post is the only thing left.

I hope you're not judging sharpness by the focus magnification image, they are terrible and hard to focus with in 4k. It's just made that way. Also 4k internal can be a little soft depending on scene content. That's just the nature of 25x compression, and it's not even that great of an encoder in 4k either.

It's super sharp in 4k raw or 4k raw to 4k prores on my 7q+. I wouldn't turn up shaerpening to get sharper kmahes, it'll just stress the already overworked codec even more. Shoot slog2, -7 detail and sharpen to taste in post. Or better yet use a 4k external recorder with slog2 or best record 4k raw or 4k raw out to prores.
