fs100 stock lens + rated iso + db gain =?

i'm still very interested in the fs100.

if i bought the camera i would buy the stock lens and the fmu (especially with the present rebate).

with that in mind, i'm walking the dog in the woods (and yes, there are woods to walk in metro nyc!) in the early morning 720am light.

as i am walking, i'm thinking about the fs100 super 35mm sensor.

i pull out my iphone and open up my handy light meter app.

(i know it is not precise but it is pretty darn good)

i set the app's iso to 500.

i thought i read the fs100 is rated at 500 iso.

is that correct?

i take a reading.

i need to shoot at f1.6 and 1/20thsec.

no good.

i bump up iso to 800.

i am imagining that this is +6db on the fs100.

on the meter i am now at f3.5 and now 1/48.

f3.5 has me thinking of the fs100's stock lens.

now it's still pretty early and i'm in the woods.

i walk into a clearing and i'm at 1/60th/f3.5/800iso.

i look around and imagine a talking head interview with only a z96 for eyelight.

i am liking what i'm thinking.

does the above film "algebra" make sense?

i look forward to any and all thoughts.

be well

Yes, according to AbelCine's testing, ISO500 is about right. But that's at 0dB gain. Each +6dB seems to be one stop (should be 3dB, but they calculate dB differently????), and you can go to +18dB, or even +24dB, with light noise. At +30dB the noise is apparent, but -- depending on what you're shooting -- may still be quite acceptable.

In ISO terms, 18dB is ISO 4,000, +24dB is ISO 8,000, and +30dB is ISO 16,000.

By my shaky calculations, if you had f1.6 and 1/20th at ISO 500, then 24dB gain would give you 1/50 at f4.

This is with no extra light.

For what you're talking about, though, you might want to try a faster lens. The Tokina 11-16 f2.8 is giving you 1/50 at +18dB gain. Go to an f1.4 lens, like the 50mm Canon FD-mount lens I got for $80, and you only need +6dB gain.

thanks for the quick response.

a nikon fast/f1.8 fifty is definitely on the short list of possible lens.

i was just amazed thinking that the often-bashed "slow" kit lens would even work by just bumping up the iso.

i did read the abel cine (great folks!) blog about the fs100's iso and dynamic range.

http://blog.abelcine.com/2011/05/27/sony-fs100-ratings-and-dynamic-range/#disqus_thread

so even going up to a measly +6db will afford me enough light to shoot my imagined interview in the woods.

as i said, i'm very interested.

be well

That is why the 'slow' kit lens works just fine (for me anyways) with this camera. It is just SOOOOO clean. You
have to totally rethink your preconceived notions on gain. I NEVER used to use gain unless absolutely
necessary, and even then I'd only add 3-6db MAX! Now, I am ALWAYS playing with the gain if I need it, and
can't even tell I used it! This thing is just amazing.....it really is a super nice chip.
