FS100 started smoking

I had the FS100 off, and I plugged it into the computer and the FS100 started smoking. I unplugged it immediatly. I've got a call into Focus Enhancements emergancy tech, but in the meantime I thought I would post this. Any thoughts? I'm very worried. Both about the FS100 and my footage.

My P2 cards are feeling somewhat less expensive now, thanks to your post. I hope you can recover the footage.

Thanks Bherr. I am able to play back the footage in the HVX200. So at least the footage is there. I heard I could record onto a p2 card as I playback. Does anyone no if this is true and how to do it? I'm going to see about borrowing a P2 card tomorrow and giving it a go.

Sure you can. As the footage is playing on your HVX's LCD screen, just press the two VCR REC buttons (gray & red) and it'll record the incoming data stream.

Glad to hear it's simple. That'll help me sleep tonight. Apparently there is a reason it's called FIREstore. To quote Frankenstein "Fire bad!"

Are you sure the 6-pin cable was not plugged in the wrong way on FS-100? Some 1394 cables will sometimes allow you to plug a cable in backwards, but they are pretty rare. As you know, the 6-pin FireWire cable does have the capability of carrying power when connected to a 6-pin port on a computer. Were you able to recover your footage to a P2 card? If you contact our tech support department, they have several solutions for getting you access to the footage.

Hope that helps,

Where you connected to a computer?
It could have been the firewire in the wrong input.
Since the computer firewire connection has a 15V. electrical output, if you had it connected to the Cam's input that would do the trick.

I did have it connected to the right input. And the camera input is still working so I am able to play back into the camera. Once I get a hold of a P2 card I should be able to save the footage. I did talk to technical support and was told about the firewire cable possibility (about having a different 6 pin ends). They asked that I send back the FS100 with the firewire cable after I have retrieved my footage and they would replace the FS100. I am thankful that technical support was helpful and the footage should be retrievable. Making this an inconvenience instead of a disaster. Technical support also said that were looking into shipping better firewire cables and ones that did right angle support, sense the equipment peripherals are so essential to the product functioning correctly.
