FS100 in P2n mode slo mo

My question involves shooting with the HVX200 mated to the FS100 set to P2n mode. Is the following true?

If the HVX is set to 720/30 at a frame rate of 60FPS and the FS100 is set to P2n, is that going to yield the same recording as the HVX set to 720/30 at 60FPS with the FS100 set to P2?

In other words, does it matter whether you are in P2n or P2 in the 2x slo mo in the above combination of settings and is the same thing is recorded to the FS100 (no savings of space either in native in that case)?

To put it yet another way, does P2n setting on the FS100 record whatever frame rate the HVX is set to?

The FS-100 is not yet dealing with frame removal for VFR. So, if you are shooting 720p/30 with 60fps frame rate, record P2 on your FS-100 and at least for us FCP users, use the FRC tool to convert the footage.

This will change in subsequent FS-100 releases.

Thanks for the response, but my question still remains: If you record 720/30 at a frame rate of 60FPS and the FS100 is set to P2n is that the same as 720/30 at a frame rate of 60FPS and the FS100 is set to P2?

No, because the FS-100 still does not know what to do with those extra over/undercranked frames. It will in most likely the next revision.

P2 PN *only* works if your frame rate is 24 or 30. If your frame rate is anything else, it defaults to regular 720/60p recording (and will take up the full 100 megabits bandwidth).

Thanks Barry. If I understand your respnse correctly, the answer to my original queston is simply, "YES".

"If the HVX is set to 720/30 at a frame rate of 60FPS and the FS100 is set to P2n, is that going to yield the same recording as the HVX set to 720/30 at 60FPS with the FS100 set to P2?

It's taken me about five read-thrus to get that all straight...

With the FS-100, and version 3.0 of the software, there is *no difference* between "P2 PN" and "P2" recording modes if your frame rate is set to anything other than 24 or 30. If your frame rate is set to any frame rate other than 30 or 24, there will be no PN simulation at all, it just records as it always did.

So when using the FS, if you use 60fps, it's going to record it as 720/60fps. Putting the HVX in 720/24p or 720/30p or 720/60p mode will make no difference to the FS-100, it's going to record as 720/60p straight up.

IINM, the actual "720/30p" or "720/24p" or "720/60p" setting doesn't even matter to the FS-100. If you're in "p2" mode, it records as if you were 720/60p, always. And in "p2 pN" mode, it only looks at the frame rate. If it sees a frame rate of 24, it records as if you had set the camera in 720/24pN mode (regardless of whether you actually have the camera in 720/30p or 720/60p mode). If it sees a frame rate of 30 fps, it'll record as if you were in 720/30pN mode, regardless of what the camera is set at.

This is not being tested, this is coming off the top of my head, so you'd want to verify, but I'm pretty sure I'm right.

If you set your FS-100 recording mode to "p2" mode, every recording is treated as if you were recording regular 720/60p in the HVX; setting 720/24p or 720/30p will make no difference to the FS-100 or the recorded footage. If you set your FS-100 recording mode to "p2 pN", once again it makes no difference to the FS-100 whether you set 720/24p or 720/30p or 720/60p mode. The recording will be made based on your frame rate. If you set your frame rate to 2,3,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22,23,25,26,27,28,32,34,36...56,58, or 60 fps, it's going to record identically, no matter what combination of "p2 mode", "p2 pN mode", "720/24p mode", "720/30p mode", or "720/60p" mode you choose. No matter how you mix and match any of those things, the FS-100 will deliver the same results.

The only time it makes a difference is if you choose a frame rate of 24 or 30 fps. In that case, it will record as "24pN" or "30pN" regardless of what you have the HVX set in. It will ignore whether you have the camera in "720/24p mode", "720/30p mode", or "720/60p mode". All those will be recorded identically based on whether you set 24fps, 30fps, or any other frame rate.

So Barry,
I have a question. if you are not on PN mode on your Firestore, then its always recording 60p. So when I shoot anything an put it on a 24p timeline on Edius, I should be able to change the speed of the clip to 40% and that should give me 1 frame per second.

so 10 seconds real time on firestore recorder at 720/24p on camera and P2 mode on FS100

can play at 24frames per second for 25 seconds (slow mo) and not have duplicate frames right?

I thought I did this once before, but now it seems as if edius doesn't show all the frames, but rather it looks as if I had recorder with the fs100 set to P2 N.

Maybe its the shutter speed that is blurring the image or something? what shutter speed should I set the camera to when trying for slow mo.

Thanks,
Luis
