FS100 good enough for Blu-ray ?

Yes, but it´s definitely not the full 1080 lines like an EX1 or a GH2. I recently made a DVD and a bluray of the same film and of course the BD looks better but it´s not that flash, when you compare them.

The FS100 has a good bit more resolving power than the GH2. 950 lines vs. 800 lines.

No, it´s exactly the other way around. The GH2 is at the maximum what AVCHD 1080p can do. The FS100 resolves about 780-800 lines. Tested by different people on DVinfo.net.

I owned a GH2 and now FS100. The GH2 definitely resolves more on par with an EX1 I also worked some time with.

I think that´s a limitation to keep the distance to the F3 bcause the F3 is also at the max what 1080p can be.

We will just have to agree to disagree then, because my research and testing has the FS100 at about 950 lines and the GH2 at a bit less. YMMV. There is a lot of artificial detail in the GH2's image that passes for sharpness. Test it against an EX1. I guarantee you, on the resolution chart the GH2 will be out-resolved.

So far all abaut full hd was simply for me . You mix my head up . I do not get it . Is that mean that fs100 can not record in full hd .I know, when you record in 1080 50i you lose every second frame but not for 25p,50p(pal).

They meassured 671 line pairs vertical and 660 lp horizontal resolution!

They wrote, that´s about 300 lp less than the Sony F3
ok but it not depends on what kind lens is using with fs100 ???

FS100 resolution chart:

The german magazine "Videoaktiv digital" tested the FS100 on release.

And another good test:
http://www.eoshd.com/content/6681/shootout-reveals-panasonic-gh2-resolution-at-canon-c300-level <-clearly putting the GH2 and F3 above the FS100

That all looks a bit odd to me, 300lp difference is quite a bit for what is supposed to be near enough the same sensor. Did they accidentally use interlaced footage? Same lens?

The lighting conditions in Phillip Blooms test are very different for the FS100. The C300 image looks very aliased too and that concurs with some tests on another site too, there's quite visible moire and aliasing on the wall. Not knocking the C300 it's a superior camera but the stills i've seen have a very aliased look to them.

In real life tests i've been very happy with the resolution i'm seeing, it's real unsharpened resolution and plenty for our needs

cheers

Funny thread this one is - a mix of rather naive questions, and very definitive answers full of "precise" numbers of lines that various cameras resolve :)

No offense guys, but as long as they fall within certain specs brackets, everything else about HD cameras is subjective and should be judged by eye. And my eyes tell me that my FS100 image is slightly but definitely lower resolution than that my EX1 can produce. Which doesn't make it "worse", as it's noiseless while - in certain conditions - the EX1 can be quite noisy.

That's all - and both being 1080p, they are both perfectly fit for BluRay delivery (just to answer the OP's question) :)

Haha, just saw this on facebook and wanted to post it, too.

The best review of the FS100 yet!

@Frank: I´m editing in vegas and frameserve my stuff to TMPGenc without any unnecesarry rendering. The DVDs and (X264) blurays TMPGenc produces are absolutely top notch! I see no difference of the source material and the bluray (encoded with 30 m/bits average, peaking at the max of the Bluray specs). The DVDs also look perfect.
Total recommendation! Those mainconcept or sony encoders inside vegas and premiere are so much worse!

Love all this pixel peeping. To OP - your question is FS100 good enough for blu ray - I answered Yes - because it absolutely, definitively is. Is it likely to look like the blu ray version of the latest blockbuster? Probably not as they have a far more advanced technique for the transfer.

I would ask people to stop trying to prove their camera is better than whatever however. Leads no where.

If you're buying an FS100, I'm imagining it's not because of the amount of lines it can/can't resolve, but more the shallower depth of field (that the EX1 would not be able to get), and yet all the audio bells and whistles etc (minus built in ND's) that the GH2 doesn't have.
Horses for courses.

I'm not trying to be a 'pixel peeper' or stir anything up. However, I just saw
the same article posted on Facebook, and read it of course (as I tend to read
anything related to the FS100.) I think it is interesting that some people are
testing the FS100 at 660-670 lp resolution and others at 800-1000 (the Adam Wilt
article has the 800 - 1000 figure). Could that be because of the lens? It just
seems like a pretty significant difference, and I was trying to figure out what
could cause the difference other than 'operator error'. Lenses, F-Stop settings?
(some lenses are soft wide open?). Different picture profiles? (there is a
'detail' setting in the PP I think.)

However, back to the OP. I produce Blu Rays with my FS 100. They look absolutely STUNNING to my
eyes. The first Blu-Ray I ever made with the FS 100 got me a call from the client to tell me that
he was just astonished at the quality. I would confidently say, that Blu Rays made with the FS 100
will look just fine. Of course, it probably all depends on your perspective. If you are used to
shooting on an Alexa, it might look a little soft. If you are used to shooting on a DSLR, it will
look very nice and sharp (especially the wide shots). Your encoder, and encoding settings will also
have an impact. But the FS 100 is certainly capable of very nice looking Blu Rays.
