FS100 File Management WorkFlow (Mac)

Greetings FS100 Veterans :)

I'm getting ready for my first shoot with the FS this week and was wondering what type of work flows you we're having the best luck with? Are you converting to ProRes or Cineform before editing, and if so what program are you using? I didn't realize these .MTS files we're going to be natively unreadable by OS X.

Thanks in advance!
Jon

Clipwrap and just start by rewrapping them (cllipwrap is one of the only programs that will do 1080p60 with audio, so that is nice when it is needed). Then I import them into Avid and they get transcoded from there to DNxHD.

Dermot, do you edit with the h.264 via AMA? Avid won't let me add most effects to h.264 AMAs and it won't let me export AAF for Resolve either if I use AMA clips. Im pretty new to MC, so is there a way to actually work with AMAs? Every tutorial I have watched just shows you how to import the clips and use them that way. Im used to just importing the clips and working with the imported DNxHD MXFs.

If you're shooting 24/25 fps, then Premiere will eat the .MTS files without problems..... Just copy over the entire "Private folder".

FCP 7 transcodes to ProRes when you Log & Transfer. It's the same workflow I follow with footage from my 7d.

We AMA them to get started and transcode to 175x the shots of high value as we work through the show. My Symp 6.01 should open the .MTS as well, but i have four more MC's - two are v5.5, and two are still v3.5, so h.264 works in any of them, where the MTS will only work in my machine.

I finish & grade in AVID|DS, there's not been any issues sending transcoded 175x & an AFE to DS as long as the versions are matching (Ie; DS 10.5.2 and MC 6.0.1).

nemesis, you say Mac, but are you on Final Cut Pro?

I am still using version 6. "Log & Capture" has been a bust for longer clips, so I use Clipwrap, which I highly endorse.
I output as Apple prores422 HQ, and edit away.

I use 'import from camera' on FCPX, when I insert the memory in my iMac it opens up automaticly. Actually didn't looked what codex it transfers to but it works like a charm it's fast and looks exellent.
I love my FS100! And more important, my client's are loving it.

I used ClipWrap, but you end up with ProRes files with a strange resolution (1920x1080 - 1888x1062).
Now I use FCP7 Log&Transfert to ProRes Proxy and HQ files.

5DtoRGB Batch to ProRes.

Just to clarify, 5d to rgb works with fs100 footage? i googled but couldn't find anything definitive.

if so, how is it? you getting better image quality? what kind of time does it take to transcode compared to the FCP log and transfer?

And while I'm on the subject, those who are using L&T with fcp, what kind of times are you getting? Mine takes forever!! It varies from just slower than realtime to sometimes 3 times realtime. And I mean if it's an hour of footage, I've had it take 3 hours. I'd be ok with realtime, but that is a rarity. Any tips on speeding this up?

Huh? Really? Not for me, clips show up as 1920X1080. Drop & play fine on a timeline with say….DSLR footage or similar.

After converting the MTS files to ProRes, play them with QuickTime and press Cmd-I. The resolution told some 1920x1080 (1888x1062).
When I do the conversion using FCP L&T I don't get that strange resolution, I get 1920x1080.
Same problem, when I export from FCP to a .mov file, same problem. When I export to a .mov file using 'sending to Compressor' I get a clear resolution of 1920x1080.
If it works for you, no problem. But I have a problem with that 1888x1062.

quicktime does this all the time. it doesn't mean anything. open the same clip in fcp or after effects and see the true size, which i suspect will say 1920x1080

Im finding when I use the log and Transfer on FCP 7 with this camera that the footage looks interlaced.
I only see it on my 50" 3D plasma when viewing my footage.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I finally kept track of some ingest speeds. This is a typical example: a 2 min. clip took about 50 secs to come off the card, convert to ProRes422 and be stored on an external drive connected with FW800. I'm on a one year-old, 15" MBPro, 2Ghz intel core i7 with 4 Gig of Ram.
