FS100 DVCPRO HD vs AVID CODEC PROBLEM!!

Hi i filmed a project with fs100 under dvcpro hd format but in avid (version 2.7.7) when i plug in the fs100 and try to edit the original footage and export it the exported video cant be played in any player (quicktime, vlc etc ...) so i have to transcode it to dn hd 185 or 220 but this takes ages (hours) when i have to do this with 3 completely full FS100 disks. So i did some experiments and noticed that when i edit the original footage "without" changing its format (leaving it at dvcprohd) and when it comes to exporting it i choose the "use avid codecs" and then it works superb with every player and dvd author software. My question is why do i have to use avid codec and not the original and when i choose the avid codec does the quality drop alot ?
thx

DVCProHD isn't available on PCs without a decoder like Raylight, or transcoding it to an Avid codec. I don't believe it's available on a Mac either without installing FCP or a Mac version DVCProHD decoder.

The quality shouldn't drop when you use the Avid codec.

thanks for the quick reply but as far as i understood from what you said the dvcpro hd format cant work without a decoder? (well if we are considiring avid codec as one thats ok then) because when i export it ticking he "avid codec" section it works perfect and i can burn the footage with dvdit pro hd
thx

If you export same as source you'll get a white screen because your system doesn't have the DVCProHD codec installed on it. You can buy Raylight, which will let your system read the file, or you can export to the Avid codec--which you've seen works.

As far as I can tell, if you export with the Avid codec it converts what would be a DVCProHD codec quicktime to an Avid codec quicktime. If you take that Avid quicktime to a system without the Avid codecs installed, you'll get a white screen. Same scenario. Avid has simply given you a way to use the footage.

Thanks for the information now i understood the problem and the solution for it so it should work perfect when i use avid codecs and burn it to a dvd or hd media
