FS100 + Cooke Panchros + Hot Rod Camera

Forgot about this. It was with a pre-production FS100, dunno how it was setup, they let me play with Panchros which was pretty sweet. Nice lil camera setup.

You have to go to the Vimeo site to watch it in HD.

2.8 is the new 1.4.

Thanks ridiculous sensor technology.

Haha! THat's what I've been saying, man. Being able to use "slow" glass is actually a really nice thought, to me. These days, I'd take a tack sharp Max aperture in the range of 3.4~4 over a sub-par T1.3 or 2.8.

Kholi, looks like you have been around a long time, don't you think the FS100 is going to have a useable lifespan equal to any previous camera.

As long as its owner has a purpose for the cameras strengths it will. Remember how long the pd150 stayed around?

I just want to say that I hate that girls hat SO MUCH / rant.

But yes, so nice to not need a 1.4 lens anymore. I was thinking about upgrading my 2.3 Lomo's, but no longer since I got the FS100!

LOL! Awww... I miss Rodney Dangerfield. =[

The hats are an acquired-look... which acquire looks... not for everyone (or even m'self, most of the time.)

Quite like the hat. I forget which MMO had one of these
style hats for sale from the company. I know they were
giving them out like crazy at one of the events (E3 Perhaps?)

Also great video and music, a huge fan if you only knew.

Dang it Kholi! I sure love the Cooke look...and I had to sell my 32mm Panchro/i to pay for Red Epic-X accessories. F. M. L.

Kholi was there a grade on the sunset/boulevard-walking bits of footage. The highlights in the sky seem to be doing some rather funky stuff at 0:41 and 0:45 - is that just what the camera does naturally in those sorts of lighting conditions?

I am a fan of Phantogram as well! They rock.

And, you're right about the hoods: I got it before they went to E3, was crazy interested in getting the limited Edition Red Wolf. I think it was for World of Warcraft or something?

Sweet video man!

Worrddd.

Oh, you mean the Money Pit that is owning a RED camera, right!? Are you shooting Pancrho's still with the E-X?

There is a grade on the footage. For what it's worth, I had no idea how to really set the camera up (pre-production model) and the nasty highlights wasn't something I fell in love with. However, I am very sure anyone who has or had the chance to dig into the extensive paint menus would be able to deal with that. It's definitely a camera, from my experience, that you want to underexpose.

It's so sensitive, as well... I had to use a ton of ND to kill a lot of that.

Hmm... I just did a test with my laptop. I've mentioned this before, but switching the video card on and off produces different results in video playback.

What looked really bad on the Intel Video Chip now looks much more pleasing to my eye when I turn on my nVidia Gaming Card.

I think this is gonna be the first article on my new blog, because it's a pretty serious issue. I think this has more to do with video card than the monitor that you view on, and I'd love to bring this to light for the masses.

Oh man, I bought my PD-150 in (I think) 2001 and last shot a paying gig with it in July of 2010. I loved that camera. It is the pinnacle of the Handycam camcorder style, with that sleek magnesium body, IMHO. I doubt if I will get THAT much longevity out of my FS100... but you never know.

I've used the FS100 a couple of times as a baby bro to an F3 package. It definately doesn't like highlights as much as the F3. Had very noticeable accelerated high end clipping, but otherwise performed very nicely. I don't think it ever did anything 'funky' like you pointed out. It just clipped fast. However without internal ND's, I have seen a vari-ND used with it, and I tell you those things are not good. When stopping down very far, it's an uneven tint and things get weird. Maybe a vari-ND was used on this?

I'd never use a vari-ND unless I was in the sh*t on a documentary and had to just to get the shot. If I had any time at all, I'd put real ND's in. They don't get weird.

The heliopan vari nd solves that problem with hard stops in both directions. The most common vari ND's like the LCW or singh ray did not have this feature and would just infinitely turn which would cause a cross hatching effect when you went beyond a certain points creating unevenness. Not an issue with the heliopan.

The video looked great. I remember this from months ago when Ilya Friedamn posted it here.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but it was a heliopan, if I recall. 77mm sized threads.... one of the better Vari-ND's, but at the end of the day, IMO, if you care about your image, I mean really care, you won't get lazy and use a vari-ND. It has side effects. Maybe some people can't see it, but I demand a higher quality than most, and I see some things I don't get when I simply use a glass ND filter and a 138 round true pola... not to mention the effects the vari-ND's can give you when you want to stop down, but NOT the pola effects. Long story short, there's a reason vari-ND's are used mainly by low-budget or even shooters. It's fast and relatively cheap compared to what proessional ND's cost. I could go into the many reasons why I don't like them, but you can likely just take their absence in the professional narrative world as a sign that many other much more qualified DP's agree.

Ah! I wonder if I sawr it when Illya posted it here. Hmm. I need to pay attention more.

Thanks, Mico... now, I need to get my hands on a C300...
