This is fun to announce. I have something very special coming that will show at nab. It will be expensive and worth it. It will last your career. With help from Sony and a brilliant Electrical Engineer we have coded a microprocessor brain that can control the FS100 LANC functions with a joystick style switch on the grip. That means "EXPANDED FOCUS" "INFO DISPLAY" "TRIGGER" and a whole lot more. It will be upgradable via firmware and I expect also user configurable on a mac. You will be able to remove the brain and insert a new one when changing cameras in the future- or something like that. I don't want to over promise but this is what I'm hearing from the wizards.

Expensive for a reason. It will have 4 rosettes for dual axis adustment. Dual lemo sockets- one for trigger and a dedicated AUX out- to control what you want - maybe strike an LED light or fire a carefully timed pyro effect. because it has sockets - you can decide what the termination will be as cameras change. The switches themselves have taken weeks to find and have firm positive "finger" to prevent misfires. There is a place to rest the trigger finger while rolling. (Your humble shooter/designer at work!) The walnut work is pretty nice too. It's pretty hefty and will fit both 15mm rods and rosettes.

I plan to offer 3 models to hit differing needs. 500 for no electro, 800 for no electro with dual rosettes, 1250 for full electro, and rosettes. About the pricing- a set of 4 rosettes is almost $200. We buy the wire from a custom manufacturer not belden. The trigger switch (gold, 500K activation rating) is $25 in bulk (a useable one is 1.67). the lemo connectors are $100. the brain is cheap to make but very expensive to design. I would offer a simpler electro version for much less but with this Sony camera using LANC a routine must be coded for any function at all. these are not FS100 specific. at nab these will fire Alexa and RED as well. Alexa and RED version actually do not need a brain for on/off so I can make a less expensive version for them! Hey don't blame me! I may be able to offer an electro version w/o rosettes that is less expensive. I know what price means because I'm an end user too. With this product though, I'm making a decision to make the best handle in the world and it's simply going to cost what it costs. That said I'm trying to also make affordable tools- so a central goal is to make an affordable version. but on this project "best tool" comes first.

We'll be making a removable leather punched cover for hot days when you need non slip feel. and just as an aside this does borrow a couple things from the Aaton grip but it's a new design. it looks different, is highly contoured and I think you're going to like it. pictures and more coming soon. very much like to hear thoughts.

We're carving and coding as fast as we can! I'll post pics here "nab eve". Along with early specs. The FS100 will have menu activations at nab. First production run will be 25 which you can reserve with a deposit on our site after nab. Satisfaction guarantee. Deposit refundable any time prior to shipping.

Sorry Rob! I'm not going to make this easy for you.

This sounds great, do you have any potential pricing for just the electronic portion?

Can't wait to see all of the information on these future units!

Stance, I'm not sure I follow you on just the electronic portion. We won't be selling the brain separately if that's what you mean?

It was actually. I suppose I will have to see the overall design. Currently
I'm quite happy with my FS100 rig. Would be really nice to be able to just
tie the button into my current layout. I think that might clarify my previous
post a bit better. Basically I have a shoulder rig I would like to integrate it with.
I like the current setup I have but would love the added function this trigger/menu system
could bring. However I would love the access on my lower handles I currently have.

Will this be an option?

+1 on that. I already have a side handle configuration that I love and I'm used to. Would be great to have a lanc like yours to clamp on to my handle. If the brain is the cheapest part to make, it seems you could do quite well selling it alone.

Probably not Stance. I have a lot invested in this as an integral product. but I won't rule it out. It's worth considering.

Guys, wait up! A brain is small circuit board with loads of tiny wires going to all the switches and wires we have designed in.
We dont hand solder them, they are printed up for us (in the US i'm glad to say!) How are you going to clamp a brain and all that spagetti with unmounted switches and sockets to your handle? We have them carefully seated into a grip but every wire is a custom length and every switch is mounted just so. Do you really want a handful of pasta with very particular switches dangling around at odd angles? yes if you are into fabrication it could be done. heck of a lot of work tho. The brain alone would get you no where because its custom made to work with particular switches with latching relays and drop bars at precise voltages with talk pins and listening pins (in the case of lanc). It's pretty complex stuff - for me anyway. but the more I think about it if you want one I'll try to make it work out after the rush is over. I'll think it over but one thing I already know - there will be no returns!! Ok?

Sounds fair enough Caleb. Naturally I can speak on the subject more when things are in
the open especially being shown in the wild. Depending on how everything hooks up
it can be as easy as building a plastic case (much like the zoom controls etc. you can buy) that
just mounts on a 15mm rail or other method for mounting on a hand grip. I see it as like the Wii mote for
your thumb, with potential better design for this application obviously.

This was what I was envisioning. Again can't say much until we see what we are working with.
It's great to know such a product is coming however so either way we win I believe.

I am very interested in this! I'd love a more comfortable grip. The Aaton had the prettiest. All I'd need is the on/off switch, but show us what ya got!

Van, the FS100 (and maybe cameras yet to be introduced) run their menu routines on the sony LANC protocol which is morse code type pulse language happening in nanoseconds. To even turn a Lanc camera on you need to code a brain. Once you get to that point in the design/expense equation adding other menu activations is pretty easy.

did i just say easy? Hmm
