I am very interested in getting a B-roll camcorder and I have been looking at the DVC-80 and I want to know based on your own personal experience, what do you prefer to shoot with the DVC-80 or PD-170. I have had my eye on both, leaning towards the DVC-80 or even the DVC30. What are the pro's and cons in your experience? I know all the specs of both cams, but i am just wondering about real world experience.

Hi Christopher,

I was using 2 DVC80s & the PD170 almost exclusively for weddings. I purchased the DVC80 1st and the Sony later. I chose the Sony for its low light performance... if I could go back and do it over I would have purchased the DVX100A instead.

I prefer the warmer Panasonic look vs the cooler Sony picture. In my experience the PD170 is better only in its low light noise levels vs the DVC80. I don't have experience with the DVX100 or DVC30 so I cannot help you there. The DVC80 has the built in Leica wider angle lens that the Sony lacks. In the PD170s favor it does have more telephoto reach, which may or may not be important to you. If you plan on using XLR audio inputs, Panasonic located the connectors in an ideal location vs Sony. All in all, for me the DVC80 is the clear winner over the PD170 especially when it was priced at or lower than the VX2100. HTH
