FS - Gear Dear Mattebox kit

I recently purchased a Gear Dear mattebox from a user on this forum (it arrived yesterday). Included in the deal were TONS of extra parts, just about enough to build out an entire 2nd mattebox.

So...you guessed it...I'm selling the 2nd kit. Don't need it, can't use it.

I hadn't seen or used one of these before yesterday, but I've got to say, it's a fairly elegant solution, especially when you consider the minimal cost for one of these.

I received three lens mounts - the HVX mount, the Canon A1 mount and the 105 mount (which is a large mount, will fit any size lens if you're using rails). I don't care which mount I keep since all three will fit my DVX, so if you buy this kit, just pick whichever of the three you want.

The ONLY thing that's not included that you would probably want to buy from Geardear.com is the front shade...it's called the "4shade" and it costs $37.50.

So here's a rundown of what is included, along with the "retail" prices:

So it's a value of over $300, can be yours for $(make me an offer). There are some other cool parts (french flag, sideflags, rails, etc) that you can buy from Gear Dear, check out their website for more info.

And as you'll notice from the pics, the rod supports are included (15mm) and are adjustable depending upon your rig (for instance, if you have a 35m adaptor). Very nice.

For the sake of simplicity, I'll include shipping (US only) and I'll eat the PayPal fees as long as you don't give me a ridiculous lowball offer.

Oh, and notice that the backbone piece is included here, which is not the case with the normal "ready-to-use" packages on the GearDear.com site.

Any questions? PM me and I'll get back ASAP.

Do you have a picture of the actual assembled unit? There's just all these individual parts and I'm having a hard time visualizing what it all is. Also the lens mount thing I don't understand. What is A1 or 105? I have a Sony EX1... will I need to buy a different lens mount?

Since you've just acquired HMC150 - how does your matte fit on that cam?
Pictures would be good as the previous poster commented.
Thanks.

Thanks for your interest...I can definitely take some pics, sorry for the confusion.

The lens mounts are various sizes. The A1 mount is a bayonet/clamp mount for the Canon A1 camcorder...I believe that's 80mm. If your camcorder lens mount is 80mm or smaller, then you can use this lens mount BUT it won't be bayonet mount (which is a bad idea anyway, I'll mention in a moment).

The 105 lens mount is 105mm. There's no bayonet, but if your lens mount size is 105mm or smaller (which is like 99% of camcorders) then you can use that one.

The little foam "donuts" work with the lens mount to seal the space between your lens and the lens mount. So, on the HPX170 and HMC150 and DVX100 for instance, you've got something like 72mm mount...so any of the lens mounts will work, just use a donut to seal the gap against your lens.

Oh, the donuts are included, by the way. 3 different sizes...see here (bottom right): http://www.geardear.com/lensmount4x5.htm

About BAYONET mounting...the mattebox is VERY light, and wouldn't put a lot of stress on your lens, but why risk it? A better option is to mount the mattebox on rods. If you don't have your own rods, a cheap place to get them is here:
http://www.indifocus.com/products_indirailspro.htm

The rails are $99, they work great and they look more professional. Also makes setting up your mattebox easier, and there's all kinds of upgrade options later on.

So for your EX1, assuming you're using the stock lens that came with your camera, it's probably going to fit fine in the A1 mount and DEFINITELY in the 105 mount. I'll just include both to be safe.

Nice thing about this mattebox is that you can get a new lens mount later on if you change cameras, just screws right on.

I'll get pics up soon, thanks again!

Fits the same as on my DVX...as I mentioned in the previous post (after yours, actually) I use rails to mount it. No other hardware needed (the mattebox includes 15mm rail mount hardware).

Hopefully that answers your question. And really, again, I'd highly recommend using rails instead of clamping/bayonetting this thing on. Just an easier solution all around. And...if you go with the indiRAILs I mentioned, there's a lot of upgrad-ability for later on.

Overall it's a good mattebox, and costs hundreds or thousands less than other matteboxes, plus I can expand my options at any time by adding/removing filter stages, or the various other parts, depending upon my shooting needs.

thanks for the info. so this holds 2 4x4 filters with one that rotates?

That's correct...this kit I'm selling is for 2 4x4 filter stages - 1 rotating, 1 fixed - with the accompanying filter holders.

Keep in mind...you can always buy additional filter stages for this. I think it will hold up to 3 filter stages at once (combination of rotating, fixed...doesn't matter).

And you can purchase additional filter holders as well...so if you've got 20 different filters, you can buy holders for each of them if you wanted, and just keep them mounted so you can slip them in at any time.

AND....if you later on purchase some larger 4x5.65 filters, you can buy that filter stage and tray size and just slide it in. Most other matteboxes either use 4x4 OR 4x5.65 (or some other size)...you can usually mix-n-match or upgrade later like you can with this one.

Okay, here are some pics...if they work

On the second picture:
1. Lens mounts

1a. - the Canon A1 mount

1b. - the 105mm general purpose mount

2. I forgot to do that number (oops...) so then

3. 15mm rail mounts...attach to the filter stages (5b and 6b) at the bottom and can slide up and down to accomodate multiple lens heights

4. Hoodbase...it's the front of the kit, where you attach other accessories like flags, etc. Those screws right below it run from the hoodbase to the lens mount, holding all the stages and everything together

5. Rotating 4x4 filter stage
5a. The filter holder
5b. The filter stage

6. Fixed 4x4 filter stage
6a. The filter holder
6b. The filter stage

7. A "backbone" aluminum piece...not required, but helps stabilize the mattebox better and does make loading and rotating filters a little easier when mounted between the two stages.

8. The donut rings...outer diameter is 120mm to adapt lens mounts to most common lens sizes.
8a. 60mm - (fits 62mm/67mm diameter)
8b. 70mm - (fits
72mm-77mm diameter)
8c. 50mm -
(fits 52mm-55mm diameter)

Hopefully that's more helpful!
