I want to switch from PC to mac and don't really want to spend any money switching, so i'm offering my computer for a mac, or i might sell it for the right price. Here's the specs

HP M8100n
AMD Athlon 5600+ 2.81ghz 64x2 Dual Core processor
3gb DDR2 Ram
500gb hard drive
GeForce 9800+ Video card

Amazon has this computer for $1,099, and i upgraded the video card a month ago, I'm looking to get somewhere around $1200 for it, or if you have a mac to trade we can work something out.

I need something strong enough to edit HD!

call or text me anytime

for what its worth. you can edit HD from a HVX/HPX (dvcproHD) on an older mac. in fact until about 3 months ago i used a 5 year old 17" mac powerbook in the field and it worked fine. rendering sucked speed-wise. but it was just fine for general editing. and you can pick one of those up for like $400. now i wouldnt advise that. im jut trying to illustrate that you dont need a state of the art mac... i sold my dual G5 2.0 and quad G5 2.5 about 2 months back for $850 and $1300 respectively and they were both chewing on HD the day before they sold.

ditto. a quad g5 is only slightly slower than the newer intel macs. i sold my quad 2.5ghz g5 and bought my 8 core 2.8 mac pro. i was disappointed that the speed increase was minimal considering the cash i paid. the only snag you may encounter is with RED footage. pretty much all of the RED software needs an intel mac.

there are actually a handful of things that require an intel mac. like the new version of aftereffects. which coincidentally was the reason behind my recent intel mac purchase ; )

sorry, that ^^^ seems like a downgrade, I have an HMC150, so i'll be transcoding AVCHD to work with, no SD.

i know you are looking for a tower but fyi, apple has refurb macbook pro's for $1350 right now. they also have a slightly faster one with double the v-ram for $1500. i just snagged one of them.

I'd definitely consider the new Mac Pros if you're going the Apple route. The new Nehalem (aka Core i7) processors excel at media-related processing. Quick benchmark:

Also, I'll be brutally honest with you: I'm not sure if you can expect to get that price for your current system, at least not on tech-savvy boards like these. Consider that you can probably build a good quad-core system right now with a 4870x2 for about $1100, maybe less. (Here's an example of another system in your price range: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-2-overclock,2146.html) But, maybe you'll have more luck on eBay and such?

Good luck in your quest.

no sorry, that thing doesn't look at all like it could handle video let alone AVCHD
It was the Bomb 10 years ago, when they taught me to edit with Premiere.

Ok, so it was really a dud, even back then... which is why I did my assignments at home on my 286 PC. But, can you blame me for trying?

i just sold my grape imac at my yard sale for $20. sat there for 2 days at that price. to think that back in the day i probably paid $1000 for it. now almost worthless....

the good news is, one day you will be able to buy an hvx for $20. of course, by that time basic cable will be broadcasting in 4k so the hvx will only be good for youtube.....

I bought mine for maybe $40, and use it for the kids to surf on. I was feeling nostalgic when I saw it. I'm just glad I don't get nostalgic very often.
