FS7: FS-7...One lens to rule them all?

Thanks for everyone's input. Sorry it took a bit to reply but I've been traveling and just got settled.

So to respond to a few comments. Yes, I am looking for suggestions as to what you've found to be a solid lens for my purpose be it past or what may potentially come up down the road. As this is going to be an investment, I could see that it would make sense to see what the reviews are on the new stuff just around the corner. That said, I think there are so many great vintage lenses that they will always present a valid option.

For the record, I am not on a quest for the "one" so to speak, I am focused on what others have found as their go to lens, if just one at all, that they use for documentary work. I'd be foolish not to lean on decades of experience from the members of this forum!

I'm looking forward to seeing what the new Sigma and Sony lenses have in store. I'll head down to NY next month in hopes that they'll have them at Photoplus Expo to check out. Lord willing, maybe I can get something on discount. I've never been so I hope it's worthwhile.

With the FS5 now in tow maybe I can work out a good trade with someone in the marketplace?

Well, people are pre-ordering the lenses despite having no first-hand experience with the lenses, are they not?
I own many lenses that I purchased despite never having used a copy of the lens in the field. Hell, I purchased the Fs7 without ever having used one, when the only reviews available were of pre-production examples. Being on the forefront of tech often necessitates informed and measured leaps of faith. Making sure to keep the sales receipt and original packaging. Besides, it's only money.

I still have the capacity to behave like a 12 year old school boy in the sweetshop with pocket money burning a hole in my pockets.

Sure you can make whatever decision you'd like for yourself, to each their own. I have bought lenses without using them, but only when things are on the shelves and have been used by professionals. I would never pre-order something like this, so I guess we just have different approaches. What you call the forefront of tech I call the hype train. If money was no object I'd just buy a set of Cooke primes and call it a day.

It may be only money, but if my gear isn't working for me and making money I have no desire to own. High end lenses definitely sit in that category, my still lenses do perfectly fine work as is. I'm intrigued by this new glass but right now it's all marketing, and I'm happy to wait a year.

I would say the CN17 and Zeiss 21 can be bought unseen

The midrange zooms (sony canon) certainly need 'feeling' before buying as they may have some gotchas

I tried to help someone seeking advice and gained a haranguing wife in the process.
