Frustrations with audio, suggestions please!

(I'm a noob). This week I worked on two different "welcome/opener" videos for a church. Both where outside. One was on top of a butte (mini-mountain) where it was incredibly windy, and the other was a golf course.

Right now I've been using the Zoom H1 w/ a $20 wired lav. mic. Obviously the lav. is going to suck, but it seemed that in the beginning it was working ok indoors, but when it's outside, no matter how close it is to the person, and how much I tweak my H1 settings, it sounds like garbage.

In both instances, I ended up just recording audio with the H1. I was fortunate enough on the butte to be able to hide the H1 in between layers of clothing to block it from the wind, and the audio turned out quite well. On the gold course, I just had to have the person hold the H1 around their belly button, and I just made sure to shoot close, tight, and high. Fortunately what we where doing, this didn't get in the way. But it was very frustrating.

I'm on a very limited budget, but I will not accept crappy audio. What would be the best solution?

I could have had a small boom pole stand, and strapped the H1 w/ a dead cat to block the wind. I might try this before buying something else.

But, would a better, wireless lav. mic be more overall useful than something like the new Rode VMP?

Ideally I'd like both, the VMP going into the GH2, and the H1 w/ a wireless lav on person. Then if needed, I could swap the two, and use the VMP as a boom mic.

Right now I can afford about $300. What would be the best additions to my H1 for quality and flexibility?

I forwarded the email announcement I got about the VMP to my Rode distributor and inquired about a price. After he researched it as far as up to their Rode rep, he came back with the news the VMP is vaporware, not even being produced yet. Bobby will sell me anything I ask for, so his news that it doesn't exist right now, I take as gospel.

As far as your audio situation, what kind of lav were you using ?? Did you use a windscreen on it, if so, any idea what brand ???

I have a Rode Videomic Pro on the way from B&H Photo (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/744768-REG/Rode_VIDEOMIC_PRO_VideoMic_Pro_Compact_Shotgun.html). I used the "Notify When in Stock" option a few weeks ago, and on 1/26, I was notified the microphone was in stock. A and day or two later B&H was out of stock. If you're interested in the VMP, definitely sign up for B&H notifications.

I'll post some pictures when I receive mine on Monday.

Chip,

I think you need to read from a different bible! :) I got my VMP yesterday from B&H.

I'll post a video/audio review later, but attached is a pic (from my iPhone) below for your viewing "enjoyment". Some brief comments...

Even after a few minutes use, I feel comfortable that this mic suits my current needs to a T - it's small, light, and has good sound. Regarding the signal strength, but my initial reaction was, "Wow, this thing has a strong signal!

Some specific comments:

  • It has a 3-position boost level:

  • "-10" is actually useful provides a decent signal if you're up close.

  • "0" level provides a strong, usable signal. You can send GH2's signal into the red zone fairly easily if your close to the mic, even with GH2's mic level is "1".

  • "+20" provides a STRONG signal. I think you could capture a gnat passing gas at 150 yards! :) I think you'll find it to be too much boost most of the time. (At least with the GH2.)
  • The on/off light is in the back, right in front of your face. Unlike other mic's I've seen, you won't have an problem noticing it and turning it off to save the battery.

  • Although it might loosen up, the battery cover is stiff and a bit hard to get off.

  • The suspension rubber bands look like they are attached better than the old Video Mic. Even after shaking it pretty hard (hard enough to bang the mic against the mounting frame sides and bottom), the rubber bands stayed on. Time will tell though.
When I get a bit of free time (hopefully this weekend), I'll post an audio/video review. If anyone has some specific requests, I'll try to include those, but here's what I'm thinking now - using a standard script:

  • VMP into GH2, inside, with all six combinations (-10, 0, +20 with high pass flat and 80hz cutoff)

  • VMP into GH2, outside, with all six combinations (there's some background highway and other ambiant noise)

  • VMP plugged into Zoom H1, inside and outside uses same combos as above. Outside would use the Red Head windscreen.
Regards,

Dan.

You can pick up a RedHead Windscreen for about $35, and they work really well, it's a good idea to have one anyways in those cases where you can't use a lapel and need to record from the H1.

if you decide to go the H1 windscreen route, I recommend the Furry Head at $15 from Amazon. This is one of the few times when less expensive doesn't mean "cheap". I bought it after watching this test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNZT3PSqtaU

My rig is the "customer image" on the Amazon product page: http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-H1-Furryhead-Windscreen-Black/dp/B0042GUXQ4/ref=cm_cmu_pg__header
