Frustrated Seller of GH1 (Hackable): what's a fair price?

Hey all, I've had my GH1 since fall 2009 and while I've been enjoying the hack I've recently decided to sell it to get the GH2. Unfortunately I've had no replies to my thread over in the dvxuser marketplace (no link here, to avoid risk of moderator deleting THIS thread).

So what's the purpose of this thread? Hmmm, to whine a bit I guess, and maybe get some attention of potential buyers (admittedly). What do you guys think is a fair price for a hackable GH1? I thought $800 USD negotiable (even though non-hackable GH1's are around $640).

I wouldn't normally respond to this kind of post (not looking for a GH1) but you do ask in the title what is a fair price.

I don't know the answer but would just point this out. Your $800 price point is only $200 short of a GH2 + 14-42 lens. Sell the lens for $100 and the price difference comes down. So I'm not sure what your offer brings to the table.

I hope you get what you are asking for but IMHO, it's too high.

Sad fact of the matter is that not so many folks want GH1's...on ebay in the uk you can see loads that have been there at £380 body hackable.
Just over a month ago I sold one for £680 with a lense. I still have 2 but have decided to keep them because im not willing to sell any of them for less I paid for (£280 was my last one 2 weeks back lol)

So its not just price...its interest in the item....many are doing like you want to do sell for GH2.

I assume that price does not include the 10x lens. Once I get my GH2, I'm going to be selling my hack-able body only GH1 but the most I'm expecting to ever get is $700 and I will consider myself extremely lucky getting that. I think if I can get $600, I wont complain.

Basically I do agree that you're asking for too much. Not that I'd complain to sell my body only GH1 for $800,

Ian T is currently having no luck selling his for $650.

I sold mine at $800... a month ago... about 20 bidding. No idea why it was sold at such high price. It could be the highest resale price. But resale price will go down. Simple supply/demand curve. More will be on the market as GH2 becomes available. I called Adorama about their GH1 in stock, and the operator told me they got lots and lots in stock. Also look at T2i and 60d deals. The competitors are lowing the price rapidly. GH2 price will go down fast, too.

Stonebat, did you sell your GH1 on ebay or here?

BTW, I just lowered my price from $800 to $710 USD negotiable.

You can still get hackable BRAND NEW GH1 bodies for $650 USD on eBay.

You're not getting the price you want, for the same reason you're selling yours....the GH2 is coming.

... What do you guys think is a fair price for a hackable NTSC GH1? ...

First let me say I hope you, Ian & others get high prices for your used, hackable GH1 cams. :-)

However, since you asked, I think a fair price (and a "priced to sell" price) for a used, hackable NTSC GH1 (body-only) in very good working condition is $250-$350 US. On a good day.

Why? Because the 14-140mm zoom lens sells new for about $760 US. A _hackable_ NTSC GH1, new, with this lens were last selling (when they were the current model) for around $1,200 US or so. Subtract the price of the lens, divide he remainder approx. in half. Boom.

Yes, it sucks, but I think it's realistic. But I still hope you get a lot more! ;-)

(It apparently worked for stonebat).

It's really a question of timing. Several weeks ago I'm sure the price for used GH1s (hackable) were higher. And as much as I don't like big names "moving" the market, recent positive reviews of the GH2 have for now sealed the fate of the older model. I say for now, because when the GH2 is widely availlable, it's possible (but improbable) that there is such a hugh fundemantal flaw in the new model, that people will want to rush back to the GH1.

The problem also is the recent info about the GH2 and release. Even though it hasn't been hacked yet, it's newer, seems to do way better in low light, and ditches the banding that seems to be more of an issue with the GH1s.

I think when it comes down to it, the value of the hackable GH1s probably dropped a good 15-20% when the GH2 was announced. You would have had a way better chance a few months ago selling your GH1 for the price you're asking for. It might drop a bit more once the GH2 is readily available though. And if the GH2 gets hacked? Expect even more of a drop very quickly.

A couple of months ago the hack was king and supply short. Now we have the GH2 about to ship.
From what I can work out, there are still banding problems with the GH2, it just kicks in at a slightly different ISO/fstop/exposure. But there are so called independent modern 'opinion makers' on the web, and we all know who they are, that have talked up the GH2, it's the way business is these days, and so hence the drop in second hand price of hackable GH1s.
It will be interesting how things develop once the GH2 is in the hands of ordinary users and we get 'real' proper feedback. I suspect the GH2 will be no more than the usual very small increment in quality bearing in mind the AF100 above it once all the dust settles.

Agreed... Some of the footage posted from the GH2 looked pretty bad. The stuff that Bloom posted looked great, but I don't think the camera matters much.

Blooms footage looked great beacuse he used locked down shots and a very nice f0.95 lense.
Ive still yet to see moving shots with the GH2.

In terms of banding I have 2 GH1's one has a bit of banding...one has none at all....ironically my oldest one is without banding (2009 and yes its a china model) thats had a lot of daily use....I do recall it having some earlier in the year but it seems to of dissapeared over time.

It seems clear to me that either not all GH1's are the same....or its sensors need a good long tme to mature lol

I can understand that for those with banding issue in dim light scenario's it must be annoying and the GH2 probably fixes this issue.

I wish you good luck with the sale and hope you make some profit...but me Im happy as I am...and when one dies I can buy another dirt cheap mwahahaha! :2vrolijk_08:

any item is only worth what someone is willing to pay. You ether wait for that someone or drop the price. for $800 you could have a t2i and a 50 1.8 brand new.
