From the New World

Okay - I decided to bite the bullet and post some of my own footage.

It's partially inspired by Disjecta's beautiful nature images, partially by Dvorak's symphony 'From the New World' - hence the name.

Please, 'save as' - I am one of those unfortunate souls with limited download bandwidth... :(

Part I:

Shot in October 2004 in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. I drove along the Skyline Drive when I came out to a magical place. There is no time lapse used in any of the shots, although some have been sped up...

Part II:
Here is my idea of steaming lake. Shot last month in Toronto, on the shores of Lake Ontario. Minus 20 degrees Celsius outside... I hope the images convey the feeling. I had hard time setting up proper colors - I wanted the clouds and the steam to be 'golden'-ish while the water and shadows retain cold colors - with lots of blue in it. Tell me what you think...

Go at it guys, trash it!

Re: From the New World

I have nothing derog to say about these Jerry! These are wonderful clips. Very scenic and I sware you 'took me away' for a bit. I'm glad to see you submit something and hope you continue to in the future as these are wonderful. Your comps are well chosen, the presentation was flawless.

One question I have:

I am pretty positive my monitor is calibrated properly; these vids seems to have that 'bridal viel' layer about them. I played with a couple grabs in VEGAS and brought the levels down (as close to 80 IRE as I could get away with) and it really brought out the details (underexposing using the videoscope).

Is your monitor calibrated? or is it mine?

Re: From the New World

absolutely beautiful. i'm so glad someone was there to capture that scenery, and thankfully you did a wonderful job. i really like the shenandoah park sequence as it was the first place i ever used my dvx100a (i went to school around there at uva) and you seem to have caught the park at its best. hats off to your composer as well!

John, thanks for the feedback. That's the thing - I am using an 'older' laptop where I am, no monitor calibration, lots of glare  :(. I just got an LCD TV/PC wide screen display last week, but have to wait until I get home to even see the footage on something better (I know, LCD is not quite the same thing as CRT, but at least I can use it to compare PC and NTSC picture... Maybe your post will help me convince my wife to let me get a PROPER monitor. ;)

I also seem to have difficulty getting rid of the B&W photography mantra: you have to have blacks and you have to have whites. I am finding that sometimes the extremes don't work that well in video...

Chances are I'll post another version some time next week.

Oh, and yes, watch out Disjecta, there are ducks and geese where I live, too! My ducks are better than your ducks!  ;D

Re: From the New World

I must commend you for shooting the second piece in that weather. I live nearby and know how cold it was. I just didnt have the heart to take my newly purchased baby out in that frigid cold.(Especially when the manual says recommended op. temp. 15c to 25c) Thank you for letting me know that it can be done.

I noticed that you seem to have more ducks in your short than some of the other posters, is this due to the exchange rate? :)

Re: From the New World

Yeah, duckettes: they are like our dollarettes - smaller but there are more of them. ;)

You haven't seen the goslings yet. ;D

All my relatives are blown away when they come for a visit. They have Canadian geese in ZOOs. They 'sort of know' we have them wild, but people don't expect to see hundreds of them just walking in parks. I have some nice shots - will post some later.

Re: From the New World

I loved it Jerry. I looks wonderful (sans that 'haze' and no not the natural weather haze!). No matter. Great stuff. VEry sceneic and picturesque!

Re: From the New World

We have ass loads of Canadian Geese around here...I mean hudreds chilling by a pond...they **** everywhere too...What the hell are they doing down here by ChiTown...Is there a way to get them to go back where they are from?? :P

Re: From the New World

Hey, what's all this talk about geese and ducks? :P

Jerry, very nice work. You surprised me. I see what you mean about the fog...I can't hold a candle to that.

You have a good sense of editing to music and your musical choice happens to be one of my all time favorite pieces. Your camera moves are very subtle, which I like, and your compositions are sound. Looks like you live in a spectacular place.

The problem, at least for me, is that a lot of your shots are repetitive. Mixing some more close/medium/long shots would make for more variety and would make it a more solid piece. I know you've done that a lot in these pieces but there is something about the tonal range that is repetitive...not sure...

When you are dealing with fog-covered landscape, it's hard to find a tremendous degree of variance but it's important to show the beauty of that area in a way that's well-rounded and doesn't have the viewer asking, "didn't I just see that shot?".

This is all meant as general advice, mainly from my own experience, and it's good to keep these things in mind for future projects. As it is, I really like it and I'd say it's the closest I've seen to my own stuff on this board. I'm glad I was able to inspire you but you clearly have talent for this kind of thing.

Re: From the New World

I was waiting if someone notices that...

After I sat back and 'just watched' (as opposed to watch-eidt-watch-edit-...), that was one of the things that struck me - lack of diversity. I would have loved to go back to the raw footage and include more close up shots but guess what? There ain't any... :-[

It's ironic, because I love details, little things like patch of fur caught on a twig...

Well, with the first clip, I was so taken by the beauty of the place that I forgot all about detail - even though you do get a hint of that with the spider web and stuff. As I mentioned, some clips were sped up, but not that much. The fog and clouds were literally dancing among the trees like that. It was simply an awesome experience.

With the second shot, I was so damn cold I couldn't think of anything really creative. Maybe next time...

Agreed, disjecta - more diversity wouldn't hurt. You have a keen eye!

Re: From the New World

Very nice work Jerry, wonderfull photography. You seem lucky enough to be at the good place when it's count. Those clouds shots in the montains (Shenandoah) are very nice, make me think about something like that I saw few year ago, but no DVX in my hands at the time. :(

Hope to see more of your work in the next future, but take your time. ;)

Re: From the New World

Wow, I am just home from work, stressed out, and then I watched that....I am completely calm. I really like the second one as I have never seen snow or ice or anything like that. It looked beautiful.

Do you have to do anything to keep the condensation from fouling up in that kind of weather? Just let the camera climatize to the temps outside before rolling?

Way beautiful! Thanks...

Re: From the New World

I'm definetly diggin it. I live in the city, we have nothing that comes close to anything you shot beside taggers spraying up some wall with trees and mountains. I love the music on the second one. I believe its titled the New World as well. ;) Great images Jerry! ;D

Re: From the New World

I kept expecting Daniel Day Lewis to spring out from the forest, hair a-flipping, musket at the ready, white baggy shirt manfully open at the chest.
