I did a shoot in the field for a doc. It was a great unexpected interview, someone really amazing. I had to set up quickly to get it. I made a background and wired up a lav and a boom mic. I monitored the audio while shooting and it sounded great.
When I viewed the footage later it sound horrible, like the mics were a million miles away. I turned down channel 2 and monitored just channel 1 where I had recorded the lav. It still sounded distant with lots of room sound.
I was in complete despair. What had I done?
Well folks, the HVX is a tricky camera: it records 4 channels. When I thought I was monitoring only channel 1--the lav--I was actually monitoring 3 channels. The HVX seems to put the HVX internal mic on channels 3 and 4.
So, when 3 and 4 were turned down and I was only hearing the lav everything was good.
