Friend wants budget camera advice.

I have an acting friend who wants to buy their own camera to do little bits of filming here and there. I'm a professional shooter so I don't have much knowledge of consumer camcorders or lower end stuff.

Her budget is £500. The only thing I could think of would be a 550D plus a 50mm. She is technically inexperienced so a DSLR plus H4n isn't going to be the best option. Are there any good HD camcorders out there with audio options?

Ideally something like an XF100 would suit her I think but they are around £2.5k so way out of budget.

Also her budget is just for the camera, not sound equipment. £500 is such a small sum I think a DSLR is the only option. Even SD cams like the XL2 sell for around £750ish.

Any advice I can pass on to her?

I would not recommend a DSLR for this. Find out whatever the current solid state VIXIA Canon model is and recommend that.

I just bought a used Canon Vixia M41 for about $400 and a Canon DM100 microphone for another $100. Pretty killer combo for the price and it shoots 24p AVCHD.

It's my "client cam" so simplicity and out of the box image quality were musts. Happy with what I've seen so far. B&H has used ones pretty cheap as well if you don't want to go the eBay route.

You hit the nail on the head with this combo! Thanks!
