Frequency Block Question

I recently bought a used G2 set-up on e-bay. It works great but the kit seems to have been bought in Germany (label on the case is German, as is the Manual). Just curious if the freq range is okay to use here in the US. The default freq is 790.60 Mhz (Block D?)

My other G2 is set to 518.150 Mhz (don't know what that block is.) I live in Colorado.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Jim,

Your G2 from Germany is either on Block "F" 708–798 MHz or Block "G" 776–866 MHz.
Your other G2 is either on Block "A" 470–560 MHz or Block "B" 518–608 MHz.
Try checking both of their lowest supported frequency ranges and you'll get your answer.

790.60 is within TV Channel 67 currently, so you should be OK with that one assuming there's nothing on Channel 67 in your area. :) However, it is in the range that's going to be going away after the DTV transition next February, so after that you may be out of luck...

Yup,

As DTV kicks in, the chances of using the 790MHz set is minimal. It will still be used by some users, but most will get other channels.

I'm not sure I understand. After DTV, I may not beable to use this wireless? Or jusr that frequency?

Supposedly anything 700MHz and above are considered useless after DTV takes over in the beginning of February 2009. There are still 8MHz available (700-708), but I wouldn't touch it.

I wouldn't consider completely useless. Depending on your area you can still use it until you really get bad interference.

from that link: At that time, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will reallocate channels 52-69 (698 – 806 MHz) for new services

Does that mean that I will be okay at frequencies above 806 Mhz? THe new set up goes higher (at least to 814.100 on the presets)

I really appreciate all this help guys. Thanks

This is version "D" - 786 - 822 MHz.

You can have it changed to any other version by having Sennheiser change the RF boards and re-set the frequencies - the charge in the UK is parts plus an hour's labour to do a system.

I normally advise people never to purchase radio from abroad as you can often end up with kit that is not on the frequencies for your country and illegal to use.

Your 518.150 MHz system is a version "A" (518 - 554 MHz).

Jim, you can check with Sennheiser USA to see if they are offering to re-frequency sets that will be obsoleted by the shift to dtv. Lectro just announced their pricing for changing frequency blocks on their products - not cheap.

Given the nature of this thread, everyone should watch out for any Lectro sets in blocks 27 and 28 - I'm seeing a lot of them being offered for great prices on eBay. If you live in the U.S., presume that anything in those blocks will be unusable (legally, anyway) in 2009.

Thanks, I will contact them.

I found out today that the guy bought it in Germany. He didn't think it was relevant to post in the e-bay listing. Even though the guy was in D.C., I should have done my homework on the frequency block before I bought it.

Anyone know about using frequencies above 806 after the reallocation though? The fact that it goes to 822mhz might be a saving grace in the end.

My guess is that, since 806 is above what is now "broadcast TV," that is currently not kosher to use, and will remain so. I don't know that for sure, but I've never seen a wireless system in the 800MHz band before...

Yeah, I'm kinda screwed. I was at the Rocky Mountain VidExpo today and I talked to one of the guys at the Sennheisser booth. Not only would using that frequency be illegal, they don't do retrofits on the G2 series. He told me that if I had been the original owner, they would have given me a rebate towards a new one, but since I bought it used, I'm out of luck.

Damn. I am really pissed about this.

... they don't do retrofits on the G2 series.

It's probably not cost-effective if it was s/h; but it's certainly possible to change a G2 from one version to another by swapping the RF boards. Sennheiser UK do this for £186 +return carriage +VAT for an SK/EK set.

Good to know. The SH rep seemed to think that (off the record), I may be okay for awhile because the reallocation will be phased in and the G2 has such limited range. It's my back-up set, so I may live dangerously for a while and see if it works.

I just feel really dumb for being taken. I'm not usually this naive about things.
