Freeze Frame Issue.

So say I have a guy riding a bike, and as he passes camera, he turns and smiles. I stop it here, and click onto freeze frame. I add a 5 second clip of a freeze frame, then go back to him riding away.

On the computer it looks good. Look at it on a TV, the freeze frame looks all jumpy and jittery. Why? ???

Can this be fixed? ???

Re: Freeze Frame Issue.

I'm assuming this is with interlaced footage (as it would not appear this way with progressive footage), therefore, you just need to deinterlace the freeze frame.

Re: Freeze Frame Issue.

I am agreeing with Jive. I have had that same problem and it seemed to be the interlaced footage that was the issue. Just use the deinterlace filter in FCP and you should hopefully be set!

Re: Freeze Frame Issue.

i have this problem every time i do a freeze frame even in 24p advanced , are there freeze frame settings somewhere that i've over looked?

Re: Freeze Frame Issue.

Funny this question came up because I just ended my project with a freeze frame! I have some cars whizzing by and when they get right up near the camera I froze the shot then faded to black. Now the video I used to shoot those cars was with a Hi-8 camera (I didn't have the DVX100 at the time) and burned it over to DV and it looked fine once I got it in my system. The freeze frame wasn't jumpy or anything. Now I didn't attempt to go back to a moving picture after the freeze. I guess you could do a match frame edit to go back to normal playback.

Re: Freeze Frame Issue.

..this may seem a bit silly, but i have done this to avoid any hassle when doing freeze frame type stuff, what i do is export the frame i want to freeze(de-interlace if necessary..usually isn't) as a full quality tiff, and then import the tiff into the project, then i insert the tiff where i want the frame to freeze, and simply stretch its length in the timline for how long i want it held there. its just an easy workaround if my nle is giving me any trouble.. which it hasnt yet, so i dont really know why i do this i guess . anyhow its a workaround if your stuck for answers

Re: Freeze Frame Issue.

Hey all.

It's really not that big of a deal. It has to do with catching a frame that is interlaced. With your DVX in normal 24p mode you will run into this about every 4-5 frames. With other cameras you will run into this much more often. But as Jive said all you have to do is add the Deinterlace filter under the video filters>video menu. This will eliminate the jitter. This is also why for the DVX, the frame it creates when the camera converts 24 to 30fps is called the "jitter" frame.

Don't worry about exporting that frame and then reimporting it. Just make it a freeze frame, add it to your timeline and then apply the Deinterlace filter to it and you will be fine.

If you have captured your 24PA material correctly in FCP4, you should never see a jitter frame. I would double check your capture settings. Just de-interlacing a jitter frame will not give you the full resolution quality of freezing a progressive frame - interpolated or not.

I would agree with Dashwood. Make sure to adjust your capture preset to remove the pulldown (should be a checkmark at the bottom of the capture presets settings window).

Your sequence settings should also be set at 23.98fps. But I have yet to do a freeze frame under those conditions, so maybe they still need to be deinterlaced because when you play the video through your camera to your TV it does add the pulldown back, which may cause some jitter issues.
