Freestyle Dance Audition Demo

Hey Everyone,

Here is a demo I made in two days. I needed to make a quick reel of me freestyling, and this is what I came up with. A few shots in the intro are not DVX, but all of the segments are. I've been researching a lot on the in camera settings, and I like how the colors in the gym turned out.

I could of cleaned up the part where I battle myself more, but lack of time, and frustration with natural lighting was preventing it to look any better. It's really no where near perfect, but the idea gets across, and the purpose of the clip is really to see my dancing, not my editing skills.

Anyways, just something little and fun.

any comments welcome.

Dude, you want to battle. ;D
jk.
You'll killed me with those moves, I'm still old school.
Good entertainment bro!

Re: Freestyle Dance Audition Demo

Sup!

Dude, that was pretty fun to watch. I feel like breakin now.

Lets go, my crew vs your crew! I'll bust out with my airtrack to a flare down to a gyro and finish it off with am old school pose. What now!

Great stuff man!

Peace! ;D

Re: Freestyle Dance Audition Demo

If I attempted to do even one of those moves, I would either get a cramp or break my nose.

I think for a demo reel, looks pretty good. But if it is for a demo-reel, you might want to make the slates a little shorter or fade in faster.

Re: Freestyle Dance Audition Demo

I can't break myself, but I love watching good break dancing. Nothing makes my jaw drop like a well executed moonwalk. I don't mean the glamourised Billy Jean walk. Kids were doing much more amazing moonwalks well before MJ did.

Great moves, good freestyling, solid acrobatics. Most enjoyable. Now I want to see the bloopers. :D

hehe...what's the difference between a 'demo reel' and a 'demo-reel'??

Yeah, I know the slates were a touch long, to save time I just used all of the same settings as I did for the title. The video was make down to the minute, it had to be in montreal this morning, and I dropped it off yesterday 6 minutes before the overnight shipping deadline.

I didn't even watch it on a TV. haha.

Re: Freestyle Dance Audition Demo

Dude, that was rockin. Good luck - you definitely got mad skills.

eh. same thing. It was past 4am when I wrote that.

Re: Freestyle Dance Audition Demo

cool stuff, man. your moves are tight. some comments even though it looks like you had to turn it in already.
the first 3 cuts you timed to the music but you unfortunately cut off the ends of your tricks too soon and I thought it was a little distracting. you don't have to have every cut happen to those hits in the music, not at the expense of missing the full trick. after all, you said so yourself that this is a demo of your dance abilities, not your editing.
for the battle scene maybe you shouldn't have your mask be a straight vertical line. make it an amorphous shape, perhaps following along elements in the background (shadows in the backdrop, highlights and shadows on the floor). You should set the feathering of the mask to a much higher number. also, keep your the mask line between the two dancers in the center for as long as possible, moving it only when one of the dancers actually crosses the center line. if you're doing this in After Effects you can make the shape of the mask follow the shape of the dance. give it a nice feathering and it will seem less noticeable.
i'm no expert on this stuff and i understand the problem with lighting and casting shadows but i hope it helps a little.

Re: Freestyle Dance Audition Demo

Thanks for the compliments everyone!

Michael,
I completely understand what you were saying as far as the very start of the demo reel. The reason why I did that was because that first move I do, the ganor, its actually a ganor to one hand rollback, but I don't hit the rollback completely, so I had to cut it out. I kinda wanted to give that initial blow up feeling of.."whooa what the heck?" of me just launching in the air, not sure what I am doing, or what's going to happen.

Everything about the battle scene, I know exactly what you mean ... the only problem with that .. is I have no idea how to do it!! haha.
I just used the crop tool in FCP to edit that. I have after effects, but I don't know how to do a mask, or how to change the shape of it .. or anything really for that matter. I haven't played with that program enough. You talked about some great points, I only wish I could execute them. Do you know of any tutorials online that talk about that sorta stuff??

Hillcity,
That was a demo for Cirque Du Soleil. They are looking for freestyle dancers / acrobats for a new show coming up. This demo is actually for a paid workshop to work with the choreographers of cirque to brainstorm ideas for the actual show. It would be a cool little gig. Get flown to montreal, train at the cirque facilities, and get paid!

Norm,
Thanks bro! does this mean you are going to film my event? Did you get my last PM, about hooking you up with gear and DVDs? let me know! I would love to have you.
What I am trying to do right now is get a hold of a projector and a screen, and do a live feed to a screen above the stage, so all the craziness will get projected above the crowd! ;)
