Free Your Mind

Re: Free Your Mind

Hey is it just me or does the song sound like a rip off of one of Depeche Mode's songs? Cant remember which one at the moment but at first I was pretty sure it was an exact imitation of the song. On the other hand that is one hell of a video, I'd love to see what you could do with a short movie, since it sounds like you still had to do what the band wanted you to do, whereas a short film would be yours to do anything you could imagine. :)

you = whoever is involved with the project :)

Re: Free Your Mind

hahaha. thanks for the comments, the stairs are a bit too long, I'm going to try throwing the elevator sequence in the middle and adding a little more of him lipsyncing (yay...not). And though I havent heard much depoche mode, I heard someone else comment before saying something similar. Well see what I end up mixin around... I have a short film idea that I am DYING to do... I should have it completed in the next month, it will be the last chance I'll get for a while to do something totally personal.

Re: Free Your Mind

Wow...great cinematography and editing.  I guess it's true what they say...sex sells :-)  Watch the video again and mentally erase the girl (if you can).  A little different, isn't it?  Just so I'm clear, let me make sure I understand the "story"  This hot-as-hell chick comes to a hotel room, perhaps after a concert? (tickets).  Anyway, she puts on this video of this artist who sounds as if he couldn't write himself out of a paper bag.  "Let's take is slow / and just start to show / what you know / and just what you know"  Wow.  Anyway, she apparently is overcome with lust and passion as she is watching this video, for she starts climbing all over the bed and shedding her clothes in about the lustiest manner possible.  At any rate, she does all this in about one minute, when she apparently decides that she should suddenly leave (maybe they were supposed to meet?  didn't wait very long, did she?)  So Mr. Cool enters the hallway at this point, and apparently there was some miscommunication about the time they were meeting, because he is under the impression that he has plenty of time, judging by his meandering pace down the hall as he croones his awful tune.  Fortunately, he snaps out of his reverie and realizes that his hot-ass chick is about to escape, and he takes to the stairs in a mad dash to find her.  Meanwhile, she heads out to the parking lot, where we discover that she must be the only patron of this particular hotel, judging by the deserted parking lot.  As she heads for the car, he catches up.  Although she's hot, she must not be very bright, because at this point, he's able to seduce her with more of the lyrics that actually feel like they're corroding my brain cells.  This time, she's won over by "Just like that...just let it go" and they start to make out.  Things get a little sketchy at this point.  Apparently, a torrential downpour begins as she, a) goes to her car and turns the headlights on, or b) has remote headlight activation.  At any rate, the car ends up pointing towards them at some point.  Because of the rain, and her extreme hotness, she can't resist apprently hitting some uber-sexy poses in the rain, while shedding some of her clothes as well.  I'm guessing this is where the story ends.  Did I get it right?

My last question is this: what does ANY of that have to do with "Free Your Mind"?  I mean, Free Your Mind is a pretty cliched song name (what a shock) but I have to wonder why the story above is a reflection of such a title, or if it has any connection at all to the song.  I felt like the video was a hodgepodge collection of stuff that was put in for it's "coolness" quotient. The chick's moves, for example, seemed more suited to playboy than mtv. Especially if playboy had music videos. I'm not against hot chicks :) but in this case, I felt like it was all very...gratuitous. Cool for the sake of cool.

Matt, I really do love your work.  As a cinematographer and editor, you do very, very well.  But I think your writing needs some work.  To be honest, I thought that was the biggest problem with Uninvited.  The lyrics of that song are fairly devoid of ambiguity, and the story seemed to be the EXACT OPPOSITE of the lyrical content.  Now, obviously, music videos have progressed past the point of being an exact visual version of the lyrics.  But they are more powerful, both visually, and from a psyological standpoint, when there is a strong connection between story and lyrical content.  That's my opinion, anyway.  "The Reason" by Hoobastank is a great song and an AWESOME video, but they don't go together at all.  What does a jewelry heist have to do with someone finding new inspiration to change things in their life?  Unless, of course, they're singing to the jewel.  :-)

Anyway, this is just my two cents, and a lot of you might disagree.  Matt, please don't be offended.  I wish I had your talent at your age.  You've got a bright career ahead of you.  But find your strengths, and try to find other people who are strong in the areas you are not, and make incredible stuff together.   :)

For what it's worth...

Re: Free Your Mind

Hey Ryan, I agree with you, but you got the story wrong.

She in her delusional enjoyment of the "little man in white" video ends up getting inside the TV, and that's where the sequences Parking lot/stairway/elevator/hotel corridor take place. So she freed her mind and had a great little adventure inside her head. But, since we live our post-modern lifes so full of engagements, so constraint, she was late and had to go. It was a small moment of mind freeing inside a dull life, just like the song wanted to be.

Anyway, of course it doesn't get much better than your version, but, if the musician thought he could write that **** and get away with that, he can't complain.

Re: Free Your Mind

hey matt,

impressive work again. great job. the imagery is outstanding.

however, i dont care for the premise of the vid either.. its very empty. she could just stay in the hotel room in one spot and it wouldnt change anything. but I assume i can place that on mr knights shoulders. anyway using sex, drugs, violence..and all that does sell... it sells people short.
imho.. a rabbit hole you need not dump your talent into.. hopefully next time youll get to work with someone with a greater vision. blah blah

anyway.. take care man. im sure ill see many more great things from you to come.

Re: Free Your Mind

Depche Mode? I think not. That song sucks. Depeche Mode didn't. ;D

Matt, you should be paid big bucks by whoever makes the Wal-Mart lights you use to light this stuff . . . or Arri should be paying you hush money! The lighting is fantastic!

Re: Free Your Mind

Taubkin got the concept right, she sortof puts herself in the video and that is why all the semi-cliche super stylish things are happening. Wind in the elavator, empty parking lot, blah blah... it's in her "mind" so it gave me license to do things such as a sudden downpour/makeout infront of the headlights;). Most of what I did was intended to "look cool"... thats all I could do with the song. Personally I think the video fits the song rather well, can you imagine a deep storyline or anything that wasnt to be taken lightly accompanied by this track? Free your mind, let go of the stress of life for a lil and fantisize :P The song is light and so is the video - enjoy it for what its worth.

its all about the

ice

cold

water.

add a lil lemon or lime and your in paradise.

Re: Free Your Mind

yeah its good...When is Colin and Stuart going to get their videos up and running?

Re: Free Your Mind

"its time to show ... before I go ....so take off your clothes "
Ahh yes one syllable words can go a long way
Good job Matt . I'd like to see the treatment you wrote for that video.
I think you could definitely get a good job as a DOP or Editor, but if you're trying to market yourself as a Director I would try to focus more on story and concept rather than the "look". Production Companies tend to lean toward creativity and ORIGINALITY when signing on directors.
But since you've gone and started your own production company that might not be an issue.

Anyways kudos ;D - CAVEMAN ;D

Re: Free Your Mind

Damn did you check out her fotos? Super-licious baby!!

Oh yeah almost forgot about the video. Great job Matt. I agree with you, I think the video fits the song. Although the lyrics are so stupid it does a driving beat although not personal preference. Technically very well done.

Re: Free Your Mind

Great shooting and post techniques as always. The song is as Hudson said, kinda gay and typical, but hey it's not like you wrote it. Great work.

On another note... what's with the main girl going out in the parking lot to unlock her... what is that a Pontiac!? Music vids always have high end rides like a benz, etc... If he was footing the bill you could've rented a benz, bimmer, etc. Normal/plain cars in videos ooze homemade. Not meant to flame or offend, just giving you some constructive criticism for your next attack.
I'm just sick of the quarter- to half- second cut style.  Yep, I've definately had enough of that.
It doesn't bother me so much that the editing is fast-paced and intense but that nearly every edit is synchopated to..the..exact..beat.  It gets predictable and jarring.  Obviously everyone's always learning (and the video does look good, especially for someone so young), but my constructive criticism to improve this clip would be to vary the edit points and have the cuts lend themselves more to the narrative than the actual thumping of the audio track.

I also think it's silly that anyone is commenting on how "bad" the song is, or conversely, giving the video extra accolade for having a "hot chick" in it.  The artistic style and technical merit of the piece has nothing to do with either of these things, and as filmmakers, I'm surprised to see so many users swayed so easily by these elements.  Maybe a good looking girl or a clip of music that you personally prefer would help you to enjoy the piece more on the whole, but as far as critiquing this guy's work, I don't think they should be part of anyone's consideration (especially the song - you take the work you can get).
