Free 3D Laser Scanner

A lazer pen would be good enough? The lazer they seem to be using looks like a bar code scanner, just judging by the width of the light.

Don't know, probably yes, read the manual it most probably uses standard formats so I would assume you could open it in any 3d app.

Ok, so I gave it a try with what I have on hand ...

I used a crappy Labtec web-cam with more noise than pixelvision.

I printed out the background and just folded it around a VHS box, so it's probably not exactly 90* like it's supposed to be.

And I don't have a laser, so I cut slits in 2 pieces of cardboard and placed them in approximate alignment at opposite ends of a kitchen paper tube and shone a big Maglite down through them - Giving me a somewhat fuzzy, and rather low contrast line that wasn't bright/long/more errors/etc.. - enough.

I spent about 5 minutes trying to align all the parts and avoid error messages enough to get some sort of result of a rather simple 3D object, a square (UK) power plug on top of a small square clock:

The quality isn't very good, but for a crap camera, false calibration, and a out of focus fuzzy light beam in place of a laser ... well, here's the result (as viewed from the side in 3D space):

Ok, no it's not pretty, but you can clearly see the corner of the plug sticking out above the face of the clock. And it looks much better when you actually move it in the 3D viewer.

I rate this as "Way freaking cool".

- Mikko ... wants to try this properly with a laser and RED

Man very cool find. I have one of those laser levelers that projects a solid laser beam i'll give it a shot.

mikko, thats got to be the *MOST* getto setup I have ever seen ! :) this just abouts tops the 35mm Adaptor that one DVXuser made using a coke can (or was it pepsi?)

I'm socked that you actually got ANYTHING to scan!, they mentioned that having the cleanest video was most important, because noise brings errors, I think with a DVX100 / or even HVX you should be able to get some pretty clean video feeds of them.

Wow, I'm impressed.

If you have any updates mikko, please share.

I WANT A LASER TOO! :)

Get one of those aligning lasers that shine a bright, long laser. I have one but I haven't got around to setting the scanner and stuff up. It looks like if you do it well enough you can get some decent results with this thing. Good Find Anhar!
