FreddieW breaks down the cost of their webseries "V.G.H.S."

Its' great if you're a video game culture nerd. It's interesting as a fellow filmmaker knowing where these guys come from and what they do. I find the BTS stuff more interesting than the show itself though.

Awesome info, thanks. They saved A LOT of money on post production by doing a lot of the VFX work themselves. That comes down to $70K per episode (there were 9). I want that budget!

Thanks for sharing!! The productions FreddieW's team are great. To watch these guys grow from shooting on DSLRs to shooting on F3's donated by Sony ...theyre living the indie dream right!? ^_^

If this series indeed got 36m views then it's a proof that any theory about filmmaking goes out the window. You can be as banal as you want and still appeal to the crowd which due to their tech know-how can watch anything that was ever made - and yet despite they still choose to watch crap. I guess it's inspirational for all want-to-make crap guys out there.

Patryk, I'm just going to be blunt. I think In Forever looks like banal crap. Pretty, yes (you did an excellent job on the visuals from what I've seen), but content-wise? Crap.

That's my opinion.

Now, I could be an asshole about it and say "Wow, Patryk, you just need to stop trying to make crap," but I know the situation is that you're trying to make the best project you know how based on your preferences and desires. And I respect that. My opinion on In Forever is just that: my personal opinion of its content.

I don't think FreddieW and team are going, "Our viewers are idiots! They'll take whatever we spoonfeed them!" I'm sure that, like you Patryk, they are trying to make the best content they can based on their preferences and desires. It's entirely not something I enjoy (couldn't make it three minutes past the first episode), but so what?

That's why "content is king" is a load of bulls*%t. It has no relevance in a practical, "here is what we're going to produce" world. It's just a pretentious phrase that tells people not to make crap.

But pretty much no one is trying to make crap. It happens...just like the bumpersticker says.

Gary, fantastic way to reinforce your point - by insulting the one who agrees with you on this specific issue...

And i could on and on why "In Forever" is NOT banal because it's TRYING to do something different - and in today's world even trying is worth a lot.

And FreddieW could go on and on why "Video Game High School" is NOT banal because it's TRYING to do something different - and in today's world even trying is worth a lot.

The "trying" part, name one thing where they are trying to be do something different.

Patryk, way to get defensive and miss the whole point. I actually had the balls to tell you to your face that I thought your project was banal crap. I tempered that with the idea that I thought it was well shot, and that it was merely my personal opinion, but apparently the idea I was trying to get across to you was lost.

You popped in this thread and denounced Video Game High School as banal crap. Perhaps it is, I don't even care for it, but now that the shoe is on the other foot, you are personally offended.

Well, tough. Deal with it. If you can't take it, don't trash other people's work either.

Gary, i had way too many conversations with you that went nowhere. So let me respectfully withdraw, not from this tread, but from talking to you.

I've noticed that he does that quite a bit. He's often a great contributor to threads as well, don't get me wrong, but it feels like every other post I see from him is maligning someone else's work, process, or artistic ability. If it's not FreddieW here, it's Steven Spielberg in the War Horse cinematography thread..

The sport of dressage is only really of interest to a subsection of people who like horses. VGHS is only really of interest to a subsection of hardcore gamers. Niche markets tend to cultivate the most passionate fans. That is the wisdom to be garnered from FreddieW's success. He didn't make the oft-made mistake of trying to broaden his appeal. It rarely works with a niche idea. You have to ride the wave of a fad to do that successfully. He has served up to his base, the liberal use of inside jokes and references bond his intended fans but exclude the wider audience. He's doing himself a disservice by publicising that himself and key personnel have gone unpaid. I'm sure his fans would tolerate him drawing a paycheck but now he has set up an expectation that he won't.
