GH4 Frames From GH4 Short [10 Bit External 4k]

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share frames from a short film I shot back in April called In the Underside. I'm still waiting for the edit to finish so I can attend the color grade. (They've run into scheduling hurdles with editorial)

You can find more information and frames here: http://www.ajyoungdp.com/itu

I shot the film using the GH4 in C4K on VLOG. I used a PIX-E5 external recorder and recorded 10bit 422 ProRes files for the entire project.

I used a combination of Veydra Primes, Russian lenses (Helios 44-2 for example), and Nikkor glass. The Russian and Nikkor lenses were used with a Mitakon Lens Turbo II.

Once the project is finished with post, I would love to share actual motion picture (instead of low res, 8 bit JPG's). Until then, hopefully these give an idea! (NOTE: I recommend checking out the better version of these attached photos on the above link; the compression of the uploaded images on this forum is pretty horrendous)

Nice work.
I checked out your website, you've been busy, really great looking images.
I recently picked up a Video Devices PIX-E5 for use with my GH4 and FS7, any tips?

Love the PIX-E5. You'll need a pretty strong magic arm to hold it; the device is rather heavy. I recommend Ultra light or Noga brand magic arms. Additionally, the PIX-E5 gets hot quick and gets almost too hot to touch. It still works, but be mindful of exposing the unit to direct sunlight for too long.

The device doesn't come with all the factory LUT's for most cameras (at least, the one I rented didn't). Thankfully, you can add LUT's to the device via the SD card slot.

Of course, this may go with out saying, but make sure the PIX is the first device to receive the signal directly from the camera, especially the GH4. Any other device will compress and degrade the 10bit or RAW signal, so always make the PIX the first device to receive the signal. It's important on the GH4 because the latency of the HDMI (lag time from real world to monitor) is pretty slow as well. Not noticable enough to ruin operating, but the PIX will need to be your operating monitor on the GH4.

Thank you for the compliments! I hope you enjoy your PIX.
