Framerate ?

In the menu, under SCENE FILE, and then under FRAMERATE, you can select the variable frame rates. DEFAULT is the standard setting, however I noticed a setting for 24 frames.

How is this different from setting the RECORDING SETUP's RECORDING FORMAT to 720p/24?

Do I need to set both for 24p recording?

Default = default, so if you set it to default and then you go to 720/24p, you'll shoot 24fps. If you set rec format to 720/30p, you'll shoot 30fps, and if you set rec format to 720/60p, you'll shoot 60fps.

But if you change away from the default (like, you set it to 24), then it'll be 24 in whatever mode you choose. So if you're in 720/24p, it's okay, everything will work the same. But if you switch to 720/30p, it'll still shoot 24fps. That means undercranking. But it also means NO AUDIO. No audio is recorded when over/undercranking.

So if you shoot 720/24p (note: not "pN", but "p") you'll get 24p carried within a 60p stream. If you choose 720/60p and set the FRAME RATE to 24fps, you'll also get 24p carried within a 60p stream. HOWEVER, one will have audio and one won't! Important distinction...

SO 720/24p is recorded as a 60i rate. Can you still edit those clips in a 720p 24p FCP project?? I tried a test and shot 720 24pN and then switched 720 24p and dropped both clips into a 720p 24p project.
The 720p 24p needed to render. But what is FCP doing to the clip?
Is it removing the pulldown? As I understand it, shooting 720p 24p or 30p will work in a 720p 30p project?? I am just trying to get a handle on this before the Hard Disc recorders come out. I have some longer form projects coming up and really do not want to shoot with DV tape.
Thanks

Not 60i, 60P. There is no "i" in 720.

720/24P is recorded as a 60P stream. 720/24pN is recorded as a 24P stream.

Yes you can edit them both in an FCP 24P project, but you may have to conform the 720/24P mode clip using cinema tools to extract the active frames. I don't really know, I haven't tried.

If you're firewiring into the FCP system, it can remove the pulldown automatically on the fly, which means it will store a 720/24P mode clip as 24 frames, not "over 60".

So, the rule is: if shooting to the cards, shoot 24pN. If recording through the firewire (to a hard disk recorder or computer or tape deck) use 24P mode.
