F35: Framegrabs and footage from F35

Here's the first bit of vision from the convict short I posted those grabs of, the trailer for 'Ghost':

I have to add this great frame by macgregor to this collection.

Cool First Grab! Did you push the Midtone Detail on the second one?
The second one was a quick extreme grade in Davinci. I wanted to see what that looked like. But the sharpening was too extreme for most things. I think abetter way to get gritty texture would be a combo of grading and subtle film grain. Though the F35 has a nice texture, it is a little too clean for grunge. I am going to see how the grain looks in 444. I feel going to BW in 422 is not as ideal as 444. I think for the project I will go more natural, but for frame grabs, I tend to go extreme, then later in motion watch again and dial it back. Once this one is complete, i’ll Post it here or on the main f35 thread.

I am really impressed with the tone curve of the F35. It is rare that I grade beyond anything subtle. I like how even with top light, the eyes sparkle. With raw cameras, I can push the tone curve to do similar things, but it is awesome to see it straight out of camera like that.

I find the F35 VERY gritty. Just push the sensitivity up of 800 in custom mode and it gets interesting. Or, rate the camera with your meter at iso800+and shoot in CineEI. Unless you do noise reduction, it’s gonna get very alive with noise. Noise, though is one of my favorite things in this camera. Since the sensor is sampling from 3 photo sites, there is a random pattern to it that becomes close to film... not ugly fixed noise pattern. But if you reduce noise, I would take the c

Hi!

My first footage from the Sony F35: https://vimeo.com/316314052

Recorded during one day. All shot handheld with a PL modified Zeiss Flektogon 20mm F/2.8, mostly wide open.

Camera settings: Daylight WB, ISO 450, Slog.
Recorded in Apple ProRes 444 on the Odyssey 7Q monitor/recorder.
Edited in DaVinci Resolve.

I think it looks really good. This is what I like about the F35. How easy it is to get good footage out of it. This seems like you just going around the house with a camera. Yet it looks like a "movie". Doesn't have that camcorder feel that most cameras do, even newer ones. This is what puts the F35 and Alexa in a league of their own. Maybe one day I will finally bite the bullet and get me a F35.

Hi, thanks for your comment!

This is one of the reasons why I really like this camera as well (so far, haven't shot much with it yet to be honest). It gives a really nice looking image straight from the camera, a look that I really like. It also seems to work better in mixed lighting conditions than I'm used to from other cameras. It's not the camera for every job or every project, but I still think it has a special place in modern film making.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding this video!

Same goes for F23 and 900.. yeah the FOV is not that of 35mm, but you can still get "movie" looking material running around a house as this guy did with his F35.
