Frame Rate Inconsistency Question

I am a little worried. I was on assignment where the client wants 1080/60 and I set my scene file as such. The menu reads System Mode 1080-59.94i, Rec Format DVCPROHD/60i, Camera Mode 60i, and the viewfinder says 60i.

But!!!!.... now the shoot is over and when I import an MXF file into FCP the QuickStat says under Video, Frame Rate 29.97

Is this anything to worry about, in terms of a Post Supervisor claiming I shot at 30?

Need to know by Monday, Thanks!

Nothing to worry about, 1080-60i is interlaced so each frame is made up of two interlaced images that ends up being 29.97 fps in the nle. You are thinking of 720-60p, which is 60 individual progressive frames per second which would show up in the nle with a frame rate of 59.94.
It seems like this is a common misunderstanding with all the different formats out there.

Yes.. and I'm still confused... I've been shooting 720-50p which shows up in the time line as 50fps...

So how do you mix this material with stuff that has been shot 25fps ????

And how would you interpret for DVD delevery...??? do you encode Upper Field first or Progressive??

Cheers

I don't want to cause more confusion but I'll try to explain what I know the best I can.

It can depend on what NLE you use but usually if you drop 50fps clips in a 25fps timeline, the NLE will drop every other frame to make it 25fps, which will preserve it's real speed during playback. (If you change the speed to 50%, all 50 frames will be used in the 25fps timeline to give you great slow motion.) The same goes for dropping 25fps clips into 50fps timelines, the NLE should double the frames in the 25fps clips to match the 50fps timeline. If the NLE doesn't automatically adjust the clips speed or framerate to the timeline, usually there is a way to conform or interpret the footage to the desired framerate (cinema tools, interpret footage function in cs4).

As for DVD delivery of 50p or 60p material, I'm not exactly sure. My guess would be that if you set it for progressive, it would eliminate every other frame and make it 25 or 30fps; or if you set it for interlace, it will combine two progressive frames into one interlaced frame, which would preserve most of the smooth motion in the 25 or 30fps DVD.

Sorry if this is confusing or doesn't make sense, I'm not the best at simple explanations.
