You don't have to hack that. Just use the interval recording feature.

You can set your record function to interval recording which will capture one individual frame at intervals you set ranging from every 2 frames up to 10 minutes.
In scene file....set operation type to VIDEO CAM
In Recording setup....set REC FUNCTION to INTERVAL
In INTERVAL TIME.....set your interval from 2F up to 10 min.
Press the RECORD button to start interval recording
Press the STOP button on the top pad to end interval recording.
Can't use 720pN (Native) modes for this and can't use 24p modes.
