Are the frame rate differences between the US and UK models significant in the final image ?

I understand that the UK version stops recording at 30 minutes..what happens then, would you have to manually start recording again?

I have the opportunity to aquire either a Uk or US version but for Uk use..would i run into any problems not withstanding the above?..thing is i really need the longer record time..and 60 fps..

Is there anyone here from the South of The Uk who would consider some paid tutorial?.i have a empty brain Gh1 wise!

Many thanks,

TT.

Yes.

If you use the NTSC (U.S.) version, just make sure that you're shooting with 1/50 shutter speed for 24p and 1/100 for 60p to avoid flickering issues with ballasted light sources. If you need to deliver the final product at 25 fps, then changing the frame rate is a piece of cake and will not noticeably affect the look of the video.

Yes, if you want to playback on a PAL set. 29.97 to 25 fps conversions all have artifacts. I'd never get a NTSC only camera to use here in Europe. Both for this issue and the risk of getting out of phase with our 50Hz AC periods. A 1/50 shutter alone is not a safe fix.

If recording times are that essential the version sold in Hong Kong / Australia do not have the EU limit which is a tax issue, not a technical one.

I'm in Sweden so alas can't help you there.

Why would you assume that a 29.97 fps to 25 fps conversion would be done? With the NTSC version, one would simply remove pulldown to get 24p and then change the frame rate to 25 fps (which would result in a 4% speed-up, of course).

So instead of one transcode step to 25 fps from the 25 in 50i now there's transcode > remove pulldown > speed up - with all the hassles of determining final length of a cut. OK once in while but as a daily workflow it will get old and tired quick.

Plus - and this is really based from long experience - setting a 1/50 shutter speed on a 24 fps recording device does not remove flicker from fluorescents and other such light sources in a safe, predictable and repeatable manner. And setting the 720 60 fps mode to 1/50 shutter results in a 29.97 frame rate file - Jack Daniel Stanley found this out and reported it when he shot his GH1 action film last summer.

If you were to use a batch process, with all footage and before any editing, then I don't see how it would be an issue.

I'll take your word for it.

That should be obvious, since a 1/50 shutter with 60 discrete frames per second would be impossible.

Martti,could you elaborate?..

`and the risk of getting out of phase with our 50Hz AC periods`

apologies if i seem really dumb because camera wise i really am!..thing is i`ve stumbled across these great Gh1`s and i`ve got to start somewhere

TT, unless you're planning to deliver for NTSC then you are really creating more headaches for yourself IMO. If the financial and/or recording time saving is worth it to you in respect of the extra time spent in post, is something only you can work out. You might well run into problems under certain lighting conditions in the UK, even shooting at 1/50 shutter.

If you need to create a 24p version, then this can be done at the final stage from 25p relatively easily.
