Frame Grabs From Our New Feature Film Western

Here are some frame grabs from our recently wrapped western/thriller (they are taken from an analog capture so lack great quality). The film was not shot with the DVX (which I used on my last feature in january)...but it almost was! We got a little more money and bumped it up to HD24P. But, I thought you guys would still like to see them.....

the only one I like is the Siloeutte of the guy pointing the gun.

You shot HD24p and these were the best grabs you could muster?

Come on.. post some real grabs.. these look like resized compressed pieces of pooh.

Honestly, I don;t like the grabs at all (minus the previously mentioned one) all of them just scream "HEY I HAVE A COLOUR EFFECT ADDED TO ME"...

I dunno maybe it is just the crummy quality of the images... perhaps the actual footage looks bitchin..

LOL. Pooh, huh? That's a new one.

Well as stated....these images went from a DVD of the trailer through an analog source capture on Final Cut Pro and then exported as a still image. That is quite a few down grades.

As for the color, the film had three color hues representing different points in the story. Most of those are from same section in the film.

But working in this business for 20 years, I can say this film is the best looking film and most interesting one I have ever done. And the cost was a fraction of most everything else. Once I get some straight HD grabs from the editor I will post them....

As for the pic you like, that is our one sheet for the film as well.

I'm gonna disagree with Loki here, I happen to like the stills quite a bit, especially number 3. The last three don't do too much for me, but I don't dislike them either. I like that old b&w movie with the color tint look though, which it reminds me of. For me, the color is a little too intense in some shots, but I like them overall... thats my worthless opinion.

I like westerns.
I like the first four.
I don't like the others.
Ummm...errr...I hate it when people say Ive been in this game for x numbers of years.
Good luck with the project.

#3 would make a fabulous painting! The others have a great feel by my standards, though it is odd how soft they are given this was HD.. the last one (even knowing you were going for a certain color/mood, comes across too purple for my tastes, but isn't that what makes the cinematic world go round, lots-o-flavors for lots of tastes, if you created and you like it, then that's all that matters, the only time I ever care what people think is when I intend to make money from people watching it, then I better hope I at least please the people with the dough!)

Thanks for sharing your work and accepting the differences of aesthetic opinion.

Man, you shouldn't have even mentioned this is HD 24p, cause these caps are so dissapointing quality wise... I think the color is WAY too intense, personally. It reminds me of crappy FMV cut scenes from a video game where everything is way too saturated.

And yeah the silhouette shot is very nice. What a great cloudscape!

Squidlips! What have you done. Beatiful images, with beatiful composition w/ way too much saturation and color correction. It is difficult to immerse yourself in something you could not see with your own eyes just like bad sound all the color will pull people out of the story of your movie.

I think the color hues picked were just all off. Sorry Squidlips. I think it dummies down the images when you add that much saturation. If you tone it down by like 500% on all of those clips I'm sure it would look cool.

I second the comments about the colors. It seems like the editor just got to know how to operate the CC controls an is making a mess out of it like a 6-year-old child with two scoops of ice cream...

Thanks for the comments gang...sorry if mentioning how long I have been doing this bugged some of ya....but was making a point about working with HD and how I have never had a project as a whole come in looking as nice as this one did.

As I mentioned, those clips were about three or four down conversions from the original HD so are not representative of the true look/color but will post them when I get my editor to send them to me. Just got these the other day and was excited to share....

:)

Look forward to seeing more...

Hopefully the four down conversions were a contributing factor to the super saturated screwed up colors.
