Frame Grabs at 300dpi

I need to do frame grabs from various DVD's for an upcoming job. I was wondering what the most efficient workflow for this would be. I was thinking exporting frames from FCP and then moving into Photoshop to get the 300dpi images, any help would be awesome.

Screen grabs will be 72 dpi.

You can use programs like PhotoZoomPro or Genuine Fractals to upres the stills with decent quality.

However, DVDs present an issue for screen grabs because Apple's DVD player doesn't permit it.

Why not just go to the original footage from your client?

For digital film and video the concept of 'dpi' is meaningless...

To 'grab' snaps off a DVD, I'd recommend ripping tools which convert the Mpeg2 of the DVD to files that can be imported into whatever NLE you are using, and thereby more manageable.

The standard DVD video dimensions are 720x480 for NTSC material, which in terms of '300 dpi', will yield images about 2.5x1.75 inches...

These can be 'uprezed' but still that's the basic resolution.

I presume also that the material on DVD's is the customers, and for one reason or another, the original material is not available...

DPI is meaningless to video images, only the actual number of pixels you have captured. The only way to get "300DPI" like images would be to shoot very high resolution initially- like say a RED camera. That would get you a frame resolution of 4096x2304 pixels.

Otherwise- standard definition is 720x480 and HD cameras are maximum 1920x1080 pixels. Give more get more.

Most "frame grabs" you see on DVD boxes are actually high-resolution digital or photographic stills snapped by the unit still photographer alongside the main unit shoot. Or sometimes they are from the 2K version used to strike negatives for release.

A little more details on the job. I will be supplied with DVD's, then I will need to capture stills from them to ultimately end up being printed in a book. So the image quality needs to be at 300DPI for a decent resolution when printed.
