Fragments - new Letus Ultimate short

Very nice lighting Steven... On some of the extreme close-ups there's some slight shakiness in the footage, what would you attribute that to?

Cheers,

Nice, and with a nice message.

I didn't dig some of the color grading you went with, but like you said, I'm sure it's still evolving.

:) That particular room was tiny so my jib wouldn't have been practical but for more time and resources, that's definitely the way to go.

Great shots there steven.

I was interested in the ultimate also, but for some reason it seems that the ultimate combined with the canon a1 makes it seem more video like, vrs the letus extreme with the a1. does anyone else notice this. The ultimate seems to fair better with the hvx more so in the filmic department.

Good looking footage though.

I like the idea. Similar to an idea I still plan on exploring. Even had a similar name haha. Very well done piece Steven.

I find the HVX and the XHA1 and the EX1 (haven't used it but seen footage) to be a hit and miss in the film look department. Sometimes I feel like the XHA1 really has a strong film look but then I see other shots and I'm much more aware of the video aspect of them.

I've used the HVX quite a bit too and I feel the same way about it.

I'm curious to see how the color grading will evolve. The blue tinting always does interesting things to anything red or brown.

One thing that bothered me was the cross dissolve with the pictures (as well as a few other dissolves) felt wrong. Maybe because this was a colder piece - IE blue "ominous" lighting, eerie music, (the story as a whole!) - a dissolve is too smooth and reminiscent of a warmer-colored feeling. The disappearing pictures seems to be a bit rudimentary in an otherwise unique piece. I wonder how that would look with a few frames of the picture-less table cut in the middle of the pictures-on-table shot (the subliminal thing is often overdone, but may be appropriate for the mood of this piece).

As far as the story goes, it certainly strikes an emotional cord (especially to us who've had good friends go through terrible, life-changing accidents) and begs questions I wouldn't ask myself recreationally. While your reasons for asking these whatifs are unknown, it doesn't matter. This kind of piece adapts itself to the viewer, which is what separates art from the rest.

Yeah, some interesting comments there, Taylor. I'm not even sold on the blue grading yet, I'm still playing with it.

As far as your assessment of the photos, I see where you are coming from. I haven't been able to step away from this film as a whole yet so I may change that somewhat. I definitely fought about making things too literal versus a little more suggestive and abstract. Some of the other dissolve choices were in order to avoid jump cuts which seemed a little distracting.

I think it has the potential to be a strong short with some tweaking here and there.

Thanks for the valuable input and compliments.

I got rid of the dissolves in favor of straight cuts and it flows better, that was a good call. I also got rid of the whole photos disappearing thing and just left it at a shot of the photos and then briefly to black. No need for a blank floor.

Anyway, I think it plays better overall. The file has been updated.

This rocks! Love it. Your lighting and photography are excellent. Who did the music? It makes the piece.

Best,

Dan
