Fox's "24" incorporates 5D Mark II into principal photography

Check out this video with A.S.C Cinematographers Rodney Charters and Sam Nicholson from "24" as they talk about how they will soon be shooting the entire show with the 5D Mark II. Not a RED but 5D Mark II. Holy crap! I love it.

A network show being shot with 5D Mark IIs. I think "House" is doing the same thing.

"metadata and autofocusing while shooting... this can be really revolutionary... facial recognition" -- this is a pro talking about autofocus and face recognition! So contrary to what many other pros still say about these "consumer-oriented" features. Face recognition on the 5D is great, it does not drift away like on Panasonic consumer camcorders, but stays at the same focal length until it re-engages with the face. Really great behavior.

The very first shot, by the way, has very noticeable moire on the far right building, but the video itself is low-res, so hard to say whether its the camera's fault or bad youtube compression.

P.S. What? Hyundai genesis?

I didn't see where they said they were moving the entire show to be shot on the 5D, but Nicholson said that as the camera proved itself as a plate camera, and B camera, it will be moved into principal or primary camera slot. I'm not quite sure how to interpret that as far as how much it would be used in that capacity. Gotta wonder what panavision thinks about this.

i'm sure Keifer Sutherland won't be happy.. didn't he make a comment about "the size of the camera" in the past??? , about not being to take it seriously??? something like that..

I think that was brought up in reference to sexing up the camera with otherwise negligible-use matte boxes.

No, they're not. The VDSLR's that are out right now are basically used as crash cams - like they say, for plates and b-roll. They won't be used for primary acquisition, and I can speak with 100% certainty on that (I have several friends working on both those shows).

Until they totally restructure their business with a new strategy, they simply cannot compete.
Yes, they cannot.

That's why these DSLRs and cousins have been hated since the early beginning. Still further significant, the bad mouth between members of the same family. As well, when the bad mouth wind changes direction towards the other side of the family.

LOL First came the man, then the film, someone invented the digital. From an unknown father but with a wealthy lineage although not entirely recognised by the grandfather (film) or even seeing its own -- the kinship denied. The wealth has fed ones and others. Until now when the cake has been stolen without prior notice.

Reminds me the famous Horatio's verse: «Graecia capta ferum victorem cepit» (the conquered Greece conquered its wild conqueror).

The game is more than ever on the markets side. It is not a full surprise anymore, the HDSLR revolution it is. And cannot be denied. The ostrich part is never the best play to see. How many rental houses or major players from the past (or present :-( will resist?

In a line, f vs. d is now more than ever: d vs. d

OK. So I have already made my position clear that MY PROBLEM is NOT MY CAMERA. I still need to earn my stripes....yadda yadda yadda....no big deal.

That being said, I'm REALLY starting to get tired of the WIDE SWEEPING opinions about DSLRs....

"Crap! Crap! Crap! DSLRs are for idiots nothing good ever came out of a DSLR! Crap! Crap! Crap!"

OR

"I am writing a script for a feature film called 'Titanic II' and I'm going to win an Oscar!...and I'm shooting the ENTIRE THING ON A D90!"

Geez people!!!!!! WAKE UP!!!!!

I am JUST AS IRRITATED at people on ONE SIDE as the OTHER!

Look....these people aren't wedding videographers OK? They are industry professionals and they love the 5d. Plain and simple. They say that it's a "revolution" what the 5d has done.

NO...it's not the end of Red Camera Company....or any other company for that matter...NO...owning one doesn't mean that you are a legitimate film maker...(you'll actually need to make films to achieve that)

It also doesn't mean that it HASN'T BEEN REVOLUTIONARY. WAKE UP! It HAS been. No...that doesn't mean that my T2i will be taking on a Red Camera any time soon, but it has still been revolutionary. What I CAN do with my 750.00 set up is FREAKING UNBELIEVABLE. No....probably NOT going to be distributed....but still revolutionary.

SHORT VERSION: It was so refreshing to hear an industry professional "matter of fact", no apologies, call these camera a revolution.

I called it a revolution when the D90 came out and dvxusers threw stones at me.

It's amazing how many people think a DSLR is a magic box and all you have to do to produce beautiful cinematic pictures is press record. A fellow film student recently suggested that I shoot with an EX1 because it was too easy to get great pictures out of my 5D. Like anything else it might look easy to the average punter but they don't see all the hard work behind the finished product.

I agree that you can't just press record. :) I still see stuff shot on the D90 and smile.

The thing that is driving me NUTS is the weird....hey it AIN'T THAT GREAT....if you had "Spidey senses like me" then you'd see this camera REALLY SUCKS. DUH! Just give it the credit it deserves. I'm NOT saying that it's the end of ANYTHING....but AGAIN....just say what these guys have said. Wow! Nice images. Great tool for the cost. Very nice.

I am sorry to also report that Red Camera Co, IS NOT shaking in their boots. Their market will be just fine....life goes on....other tools will evolve....BUT....DSLRs are a legitimate tool in the right hands in the right situation. Give credit where it's due!

Do not forget, subject to change though. Count on it! LOL

Optimistic POVs are always welcome! ;-)

You might want to scroll to the part where the DOP of the show, Rodney, says that they plan to use the 5D first for 2nd unit photography and then for principal photography.

His info might supercede your friends. (Perhaps he has new inside canon knowledge).

I noticed every time there is a topic of these vDSLR cameras being use in a large productions, there's always hate, hate, and more hate.

Honestly, I feel sorry for a lot of ppl on here scrambling their way in life, being so bitter, not making enough money, and come on forums just to b*tch. So quit the b*tching and get the sh*et of the internet and make some money. Sorry for the language but it's getting really annoying.
