Fox partial use of DVX100 on Arrested Development

I recently stumbled across this article from the Panasonic broadcast site:
http://www.panasonic.com/PBDS/subcat/newsinfo/press_03/03_94.html

The sit-com is co-produced by Ron Howard (who also narrates the show) and they interview the DP in the article. They almost used the DVX100 for the entire sitcom, but decided instead to rent the $65,000 HDC27 Varicam (24p High Definition). However, the DVX100 is used for flashbacks and other specialty uses.

Also of interest to dvxuser readers is a glimpse into how they put the show together with minimal set ups and minimal lighting requirements. Cool stuff.

Interesting article. I'm not a huge fan of the show, but the look behind the scenes is worthy reading.

Actually, I've only been watching the show because of the stuff in that article. The show is typical Fox - lots of sex and sub par humor. However, one episode was really funny a few weeks back. The others haven't been so good. On the night of the NFL championships, the show was delayed for a half hour, so for the first (and last) time I watched Malcom in the Middle which comes before. How do unfunny shows like Malcom stay on? Our family typically watches "TV Land," so in the rare cases that I see a contemporary sitcom, I'm surprised how much idiotic stuff passes for entertainment. No creativity and not much humor. Take away sexual humor and insult humor, there's nothing left. However, I will continue to watch Arrested Development for the production reasons in the article, and keep watching for DVX100 clips! (what a trooper, huh?).

I haven't seen this show before, but I was wondering how you guys find the DVX holds up? Like I mean does it intercut with the HD footage cleanly, or can you tell when they're switching to our "little friend" :P

ask Robert Rodriguez.. He uses the DVX100 to shoot pickups and inserts in most of his shows now including Once upon a Time in Mexico etc.

I JUST WATCHED once upn aa time in mexico lat night, and i watch the behind the scenes special stuff, and i thought to myslef, "wow this looks  like dvx footage.. i wonder if he uses it" guess i was right.:)      on a side note the film was blah, but i wasnt expecting much,, just killing time. hes a pretty cool filmmaker though. wish i had his dough to make my visions a reality. i did find it funny that he uses a very similar music production setup to me. got the same synth workstation. good ol k2500xs (really its more like a k2600 after all the mods now. but same thing anyway)

REALLY?

That's wicked, lol

Has anyone made an attempt at scene files and setting to get the "Arrested Development" VariCam look. We just started watching the show and it looks great. I'd love to get this look on my HVX.

Hey guys

This is the first I heard of the dvx being used for Rodriguez's Once Upon a Time.

In which scene?

Thanks

I'm trying to picture what 'look' the "Varicam look" would be for this show. I've seen every episode and own the DVD's but I don't know that it has a significant look other than hand-held, run-and-gun low-budget sitcom.

Don't get me wrong - I love the show (obviously). I'd cook up a scene file if I felt there was indeed one there. Describe what you're imagining as a palette. Short of going out and renting a Varicam, I don't know that there's much to work with.

this is off topic, but did you guys even watch the same show i'm watching? this is the most brilliant comedy on television. "sub-par humor?" what's good humor then? "lots of sex?" when, where, how? arrested development is the ANTITHESIS of modern sitcom humor.

I too immensely enjoy this show. The thing I love the best is being able to get all three seasons on DVD for a total of $40. That's how it should be.

This thread was ressurected

I agree; I haven't seen the entire series but what I did see was great sutff; some of the best on tv.

Ditto, onions: I completely agree. By far one of the best things that has happened to TV in a long time.

Seems like they got pretty beat up trying to sell it too. It's now on both G4 (weird acquisition) and HDNet.. And, of course, my DVD player.

Hell - just keep the thread going w/ lines.... "Oh, Tobias! You blow-hard!"

"I blue myself".

"Well, Michael, looks like I run a pretty tight ship."
"With a pool table?"
"It's a gaming ship."
