Fox goes entirely P2

This is great news.

Any chance to get AVC-Intra on the HVX?
Doubtful. In the cameras FOX selected, it's done using an AVC-Intra board. There is no place for such a board in the HVX, and I suspect the functionality can't be added through firmware changes alone.

I was shooting a commercial about 6 months ago and noticed a Fox news guy with a Panasonic that was all P2, I didnt get a chance to ask him which model camera he had.

Barry.. I heard about this from my buddy who works for the Fox Affiliate here in Orlando. They are going with the big shoulder mounted versions for the most part. When they come in, I might go over and give them a little P2 demo and such. I already went over and demo'd the HVX back in May and they liked the footage a lot.. but worried about the form factor and how "pro" it looked out in the field.

Good news though as a larger market adoption might mean cheaper P2 prices and more avenues for people to be stringers for local FOX affiliates. I mean.. how badass would it be to shoot some HVX stuff and hand them MXF files... that's something sweet!

All Fox owned & operated stations are moving to 100% P2 gathering,.

Thats big time, just means PANASONIC will also have a great investment in P2 technology, translating to lower prices. . . .

Probably the SPX800 or the SPC700. I think they were the only two 2/3" P2 cameras on the market six months ago.

Cox Broadcasting is buying the HPX2000 for the Charlotte and Atlanta stations.
Do you thank us good old boys will ever get a 16 G P2

Waiting for AJ HPX 2000. Anybody got any idea when they gonna arrive?

Interesting... I was on a shoot with a bunch of news shooters last week including a photog from the Fox O&O here in Phoenix. It was also the last station I worked at before making my exit from news.

Anyway, he was shooting with a brand new Sony Xdcam, sounds like he'll be changing again soon. They were just shooting Betacam SX before that after coming from Beta SP. Interesting times.

Check this out -- Australia has a similar announcement. Their national broadcaster, ABC (the Australian Broadcasting Corporation) has just signed an exclusive 3-year P2-only deal with Panasonic Australia.

And, IINM, New Zealand's TV3 broadcaster is 100% P2 as well.

And India's NDTV, "the largest private producer of news, current affairs and entertainment TV" (from NDTV.com's "about us" page), is using a huge amount of HVXs, they may be 100% P2 but I'm not sure. Huge organization though; the largest private producer in a country of a billion people (and the 2nd-largest movie production hub in the world) means there's a lot of P2 work getting done over there.

Sure seems like all this can only be good news for HVX users as far as card prices coming down, and format longevity.

Awesome Barry. Like to put this in perspective too. A buddy here locally has a client with all this HDV footage and he's stuck. He'll either have to track down the camera that shot it, I believe a JVC, and then either borrow a cam... rent one or a deck. I don't think there's any conformity and each system uses it's own special flavor of HDV. If I'm not mistaken. What a giant pain that is if you get a bunch of different sources... and yes, MOST pro houses get footage from all over. Now when he gets HVX footage... what a breeze!

I think this wide industry adoption should open things up for all kinds of great 3rd party products and cheaper prices. Ahhh.. when the 4 gig cards are less than 200 bucks I'll buy 10 of them.

Thanks Barry.. Where are you in the world these days?

Mainly in NC, haven't gone overseas for a few months. Just got back from Minnesota, and as far as I know I should stay put for a while. :)

What Barry said about longevity of format is great. We'll all reap benefit from more and more creators adopting P2.

Things in my world have become so much better since Marcus and his DVFilm team brought us Raylight. Innovation can come from all corners - hopefully we'll continue to see such advances as more and more content creators jump on-board.
