Can someone please explain the HVX200 four-channel options? Under what circumstances and with what formats will it work? I only noticed two XLRs. How do we get channels 3 and 4? Thanks in advance...
Well the Xl2 has it as well. You can use the onboard mic as the other two, as well it has two RCA inputs that can be used with for channels 3 and 4. Unbalenced but it is still a nice option. I imagine it will be something similar, but with better sound reselution than the Canon
Four channels are supported under DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO-HD.
It is unclear what options we may have for recording four channels with the HVX. As I understand it, you can use the XLR's for ch 1 & 2, and the onboard stereo mic for 3 & 4. Under discussion is the idea of an accessory plug-in device that would give you two more XLR's, or perhaps using the RCA inputs.
More info will undoubtedly be forthcoming as details get finalized.
I'm lobbying to make the onboard mic removable, and a plug-in XLR option board able to snap on there, giving us four full channels and direct line-level access to the goods in the camera. Or, the RCA's are an option. Or, as you say, maybe they could implement it through USB2 -- that would be cool! Although I can foresee that USB2 port getting used for a lot of purposes... maybe we'll have to get a USB2 hub for it...
Barry I was just chatting with a sound mixing friend about this and we were talking about how nice it would be to get rid of that cruddy mic and use whatever inputs it would use. If you had chubby cheeks, and I was within distance, I would be squeezing them right now. Keep on them about this, that would be fantastic. I would toss in an extra 300-500 for two more balanced inputs.

If you are reading this and would like to implement at some point a breakout box type of option,
the audio professional to talk with would be Wolf Seeburg, Hollywood sound recordist and author of 24p: For Sound And Video Assist and 24p: Sync Sound. That way, even the critics could be happy.
Thing is this would be very simple (in a non-programmers mind at least) to develop since,
and only because, it has USB. It would seem like Sound Devices USBPre could be adapted
to work with this camera. Perhaps other interfaces would work as well. Just suggestions. Take 'em or leave 'em.
