Four audio tracks: HPX hack

Before becoming a wannabe video producer, I was a designer of stuff (3D modeling), mostly yacht hardware with a large dose of electrical-mechanical-hydraulic stuff mixed in. Now I only do design work when I want to eat and live indoors; that is in between low profit video projects, like today. So for a long time, I've known that most anything is possible if you have some real money to throw around. My little designer brain began to whir after reading a couple of posts down about the HPX recording 4 tracks.

The HPX like most cams, has a built in mic. But in the case of the HPX170 (HVX,HPX300) it will record four tracks, two from external sources, and two from the built in mic which you can't control. Now the brainiac idea: What if you bypassed the built in mic and made those two inputs available to record two more external sources.

I can already hear it....but you would have no control, no phantom power, blah blah. Now think about the Panny MYA30G adapter for the HMC-40. It is a little box with everything you need, ready to go.

It gives you phantom, pads, and pots in one prebuilt unit with a plug to get the audio out to the cam.

I assume that the built in mic on the HPX is dynamic, so the wiring into the cam is probably mic level. I don't know if the output from the MYA 30 is line or mic. You would have to figure out how to monitor the extra two tracks.

Although I'm pretty spooky about hacking (my) stuff, this one seems not too crazy if you needed the four tracks. This wouldn't be too big a leap for the next generation HPX or similar; add a compatible plug on the handle, buy the MYA adapter that they already make.....Baddabing, 4tracks to your P2 handycam.

Now I need to go away and make some money,

I was this close to doing the mod on my hvx when I got it, one of my requests for the new AF100 is to have 4 audio inputs, maybe channel 3&4 mini XLR's to save space.

After I looked into the mod there was an eq issue, I think it might be ok for most projects if you keep channels 3&4 on the talent that talks the least.

I know of several people who have done the mod for an hvx but I have not seen one yet for the hpx/170, I'm sure it's pretty much the exact same.
