I was given the method to access the EX1R Service Menus, and permission to share it, on the phone with Sony Support.

Phone contact to request the sequence directly from Sony -
(800) 883-6817 /Opt 2/ Opt 5/ Opt 2

Here is the part that differs from the EX1-

LCD must be in the closed position
LCD B. Light switch (under top handle) must be in the OFF position
Gain must be set to H

Then the same as EX1-

Press and hold Cancel + Jog Wheel, then + Menu
Maintenance, RPN and Information Menu items will be added to bottom of Menu below Others
Flangeback auto adjustment (also called back focus) is under Maintenance, shown as Auto FB Adjust

Procedure is the same as the EX1-

An 8" or larger Seimens star chart is ideal. Siemens star - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It should be mounted on a plain wall, wide enough to cover most of the frame at Z0, widest angle
Other high contrast objects within this field of view may effect the calibration
Mount the camera on a tripod, about 10' away from the high contrast back focus target
Zoom all the way in to the target and center it in the viewfinder
Set lens to Auto Focus, Focus Ring pushed forward, Auto Iris, Macro Off
Select Auto FB Adjust in the Maintenance menu
Select Execute

Thanks! I noticed my backfocus seemed to have reset when I updated my ex1r's firmware...rather annoying

is complicated to install new software to EX1R? Now I bought myself and want to install it EX1R oftul 1.10
Have you seen an improvement over the old version?
Thanks

its incredibly easy, just a few steps. Haven't used it much yet to notice any improvement, although the boot time of the camera from off to on is about twice as fast.

wow, that yes, you tested how filming on MXR,S&Q mode?I tested version 1.0 software with this version I bought camera, after about 4 minutes filamere returned error.I used Transcend cards,16gb class 6.far I have not had problems with these cards, and work perfectly in normal mode shooting.I bought on ebay a sxs 8gb,and so can I install new software 1.10.
Happy Easter to all

And you will want to do this from time to time since the lenses on these cameras will have the back-focus drift simply with use. Also don't forget to do the process again for each ND filter setting since the filter will affect the back focus. When you put in an ND filter, you can adjust the exposure by changing the shutter speed instead of the iris (which on the EX1, must be in the Auto mode).

My shots all seem rather softs. I am used to shooting with a 5D which always looks banging! I did the backflange adjustment as suggested here, but they look about the same. Any words of advice? Perhaps I just need to dial in a little sharpening.
I am also recording to a KiPro, which should make it even better.

The high contrast of the 5D makes it look sharper than it really is if you blow the footage up.

Increase the EX1 footage contrast, which by default is flat, for a similar look.
